Quick Mask Page 9.4
On the fourth instruction on page 9, To paint out the offending selection... use keyboard selection"x" to switch to white and paint out the selection.

The painting in white removes nothing. Painting in black adds to the mask, but there is no way to subract the "offending selection"

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong

You're doing things correctly, only when you exit Quick Mask will you see the effect.

Re: Quick Mask Page 9.4
I tried moving out out of quick mask mode. By pressing the button next to quick mask on the tool bar.

The outline that the "running outs showed me" showed the area that had been outlined by my misstep above.

Bottom line, I can't subtract. Could I have a config wrong or something?

I've just tried it as shown in the book and it works fine for me. However it's worth checking your settings for the brush used in the boxes at the top of the screen. The program remembers the last settings and the effect you have will happen if the mode is set to any of the darken modes ie. darken, multiply, color burn or linear burn. Change the mode to normal and it should be okay.

It sounds to me as if you have QuickMask set up to mask the highlighted area, rather than to select it. Double click the QM icon in the toolbar, and change this preference. Then, painting in white should remove data from the painted area.

Rufus got the correct answer... The mode was set to linear burn... whatever that is. When I set it to normal, the mask works as described.

Thanks all

Re: Quick Mask Page 9.4
Easily done. There are keyboard shortcuts to change the mode of the current tool or layer - alt+shift+M for multiply, alt+shift+H for Hard Light, and so on. Easy to hit one of these by accident!
