It's probably my brain still being in holiday mode bt I am not understanding the shadows were achieved in step 6 pg. 53. Anyone want to break this down for me?

Roger,

First, create a new layer for each shadow, directly above the layer to which you want it applied, and check Use Previous Layer to Create Clipping Mask in the New Layer dialog. When you paint on the new layer, it will only show up where it overlaps the layer beneath. Use a soft-edged brush, set to an opacity of about 40%, and gradually build up the shadow.
