Layer Mask 4
I'm a bit confused. The first instruction for 4a is to hold ctrl and click the layer name to load selection. I can only load the selction by holding ctrl and clicking the thumbnail of the layer. At that point the directions say to make a layer mask and inverse the selection. If I load the selction and click the layer mask icon I loose the marching ants and can't invert the selction.

I know PS has changed slightly and I can't remember if earlier versions worked differently but the way around this is to swap the first two procedures around. Create the layer mask first then Ctrl/Cmd+Click the layer's thumbnail. Carry on from here and it should all work fine.

I spoke too soon. I got it to work but I had to do it a bit differently. I had to ctrl click the thumbnail, make the layer mask, ctrl click the mask thumbnail, and then invert and proceed with feathering. Are these kind of discrepencies common?

Yes, that is another way of doing it. Adobe seem to like keeping users on their toes by changing the way PS operates. For instance, prior to CS2, layers were linked by way of clicking the chain icon in the layer palette. Now, you temporarily link them by ctrl/cmd+clicking the layer names (which personally, I think is a much better way of doing things!). The permanent linking function is done by way of an icon at the bottom of the palette. There are also shortcut changes. Ctrl/Cmd+G used to create a clipping mask between 2 layers. Now, it creates a group (which used be called a set) and so on..

Re: Layer Mask 4
I suspect that your using CS2, I flagged this problem to Steve previously and he explaned that in earlier versions the selection was loaded by clicking on the layer name.

So with the hand layer active, Ctrl click on the layer thumbnail to load the selection, feather the selection by 1 or 2 pixels using Alt+Ctrl+D, add a layer mask using Layer/Layer Mask/Reveal Selection (or click on the Add layer mask icon at the bottom of the palette).

To observe the effect of the mask you can turn it off and on by clicking on the layer mask icon with the Shift key pressed.
