Whats happened to my Layer masks?
Hi everyone, I'm sure I'm missing something really basic right in front of me, but when I place a layer mask (reveal all) to a layer, i get going with the brush and nothing is happening.

I'm sure i've just accidently clicked on some setting or preset thats disabled the function. It was working fine...something to do with the channels layer that is created when i place the mask layer?.. I'm at a bit of a loss really, losing the ability to mask layers is a bit distressing!

Ollie,

Don't panic! This sort of thing happens all the time. It's probably one of two options:

1. You're using white rather than black to paint with. (This is unlikely, I'm sure you'll already have thought to check.)

2. Your brush tool is set to a mode other than Normal - perhaps Screen or Lighten. If this is the case, painting in black on the layer mask won't have any effect at all.

If you still have a problem, post a screen grab showing a layer mask in (in)action, and we'll see if we can spot any obvious problems!

Steve

Thank you so much steve, you were spot on, I'm such a numpty!

I knew it was something like that! God knows what'll happen when I have a real problem!

Well, I'll come here of course, thanks again, the forum is a great resource and the book yields up little gems with each passing day which means I'm making quantum leaps in understanding the program and achieving results I've always wanted, its great!

Thanks again!
