DISASTER!!
The most bizarre thing has happened, I have worked all day on an extremely dense PSD, dozens of layers. I shut down my PC & nipped out, I'm back now and attempted to re-open the file to continue work and I'm getting an error message that reads: "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop"

Well it was created in "this version" (CS2) its been endlessly refined and worked on in "this version"!!

It was shaping up to be a truly wonderful image and was required for a brief, If its gone then I've lost two days of work and a fantastic piece of digital art.

BLOODY COMPUTERS!!!

(deep breath) apologies for the rant, any suggestions anyone?

I was burning a CD when the burn process stopped at 85% and wouldnt continue, I became tired of waiting for it to sort itself out so I decided to reboot, i saved the above mentioned image then killed the CD writing software and rebooted. That was the last thing that happened, now this?!!?

Could an error with another program have corrupted the PSD file whilst i was saving ? if the computer was experiencing difficulties at the time?

Re: DISASTER!!
It looks to be a good possibility that the CD writing software has locked up your system snatching the majority of the processors run cycles (appearing to do nothing but in fact running the legs off your computer in the background)

Ctrl+Alt+Del (Windows XP) would have brought up the Windows Task Manager and clicking on the 'Preformance' tab may have shown the CPU running at 100% which may have meant that when you came to saving your PSD file it may not have been allocated the processing power available to do a complete job of saving your file which inevitably will have meant a corrupted file.

However, all may not be as yet lost there are .psd recovering programs here's one for example (I'm not sure if this is suitable but it might help) http://officerecovery.com/photoshop/

here's another one Flobo PSD Recovery

both the above programs claim to recover layers and convert them into either bitmaps or jpgs if that helps you at all.

However have you tried loading the file into an earlier version of Photoshop?

Re: DISASTER!!
I haven't tried loading it into an earlier version as yet, I have a friend who still works in ver.7, I'll give that a go.

In the meantime I'll take a look at those links.

Thank you very much for supplying them. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thank you for posting a reply, Its SO disheartening losing a ton of work. Fingers crossed I may be able to attempt a recovery!

If anyone else knows ways in which to retrieve corrupted PSD files then post them here! Much appreciated!
