Cutting Out
Sorry if this is basic,I want to select a shape,oval square etc,
I place it over the image,photo etc I then want to cut and move the image with a nice clean chosen edge,no background corners of the original showing.I almost did it in the lesson on page 4 item 7

Make your selection with the Elliptical Marquee tool (hold SHIFT while you're drawing it if you want a circle) and then use Ctrl-J to make the selection into a new layer. If you then hide or delete the original layer, you'll have just the circular image that you want.

Is that similar to using the elipse as a crop tool?

No, you can only crop rectangular selections.
