Clipping
Try as I might, I just can't seem to "get" the clipping path thing  For example, I would like to lift the little vehicle icons from the attached document, but I am baffled as to how to do it. Perhaps clipping isn't the idea here?

I think you are going the wrong way here. If all you want is the tanks as objects, it is better to select them (magic wand, etc.) and create them on a separate layer. Clipping layers are really meant to isolate certain parts of a layer but with the option of un-hiding if necessary. If these are full size, the magic wand would be your best tool. If not, use the pen/path tool. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

The Magic Wand doesn't want to select the whole vehicle; it isolates parts of the of the paint schemes. My "Dummies" book doesn't cover this too well |

The trick here is not to select the vehicle. Select the background instead. There is a definite outline, even at this scale. Once it's selected, inverse the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I), create a new layer (Ctrl+J).
