Well, actually two problems:
The first problem, the first annoying problem, is that whenever I zoom in (pic larger than "Fit to screen" mode) using the Polygon Tool and--yes, you guessed it--I get to the end of the window and want to move across or along, when the tool streaks across the the hidden remainder of the screen from which there is no recovery.

The second problem is that not all Gif images will allow me to "Defringe" in spite of them all being on their own separate layer with transparency when activated; for example, I Have a different Hemera object library to that offered in the CD in Steve's book, but the object is still against a transparency. It ignores my frantic attempts to defringe; in the end, I resort to the "Stroke Outline" procedure and check the "Inside image" box, which does the job of defringing.

The first one's easy. Press F to change the viewing mode so that the window edges disappear, and you view the image against a grey background. Now, you'll be able to pan the image around the screen at will, and can trace outside the window area.

I don't understand why Defringe isn't working for you, though. Could it be that the GIF image isn't in RGB mode, but Indexed? Maybe post an image so we can have a look at it.

Re: Well, actually two problems:
I assume that you meant use the F key before using the Polygon tool, as NOTHING will respond when the
polygon tool is showing in the image.

When you say "pan the image around at will", do you mean using the Polygon tool as the means to "pan"?

Since posting I have experimented with this key and that key, and have found that (pressing on the Spacebar while still keeping the left mouse button depressed) the Polygon tool icon changes to hand. This then enables me to contort one of my adjacent free fingers to drag this Hand icon using the touchpad on my laptop to another part of the hidden image.

Here's a screenie of my other problem: the Gif that won't defringe.
Thanks Mike

The best way to remove the fringe would be with a mask. Ctrl+click the layer to load its selection. Use Select>Modify>Contract and set the number of pixels. It's difficult to see how much but I'd say somewhere around 5. Add a feather of 1-2 pixels. Click the layer mask icon at the bottom of layer palette.

You can always shrink/expand the selection and redo the mask if it's not quite right.

Yes! That worked. What a neat little trick.

I can only imagine that the Gifs are not correctly recognised by Photoshop (in the screenshot far left, see the "white swan.gif" which does not have the photoshop logo.

Thanks Mike
