Book Instructions Difficult to Follow
First of i like the book and it is great, however some of the terminology assumes a greater than beginner understanding of photoshop. Example Page 56 Layer Masks 3: Soft Edges Step 3 - Fill the selection with black This might be a well known phrase to a photoshop veteran but to me it means didly squat. Should i use the paint bucket brush? How do i fill with black? I worked it out 2 ways eventually. I did the sky thing with the gradient (Step 1 and 2) Created the Layer Mask (Layer - Layer Mask - Reveal All) Hold Ctrl and click on Name in Layers Palette (Ok So Far) Inverse Selection (Ok Here Too) Fill New Selection with Black (Problems!!) Here is how i did it: Made sure that set foregound / background icons in the toolbox had white at the front and black at the back. Then i hit delete to end up with the layer mask as per the book. I then went to the channels palette, selected the layer mask and unselected the RGB. I then used the smudge tool to do the grass growing. The other way i managed to do it was to: Make a selection of the people, then make a mask from the selection (Layer - Layer Mask - Reveal Selection) Not sure if i did it right, but i eventually ended up with the same solution. |

Like most things in Photoshop there are many ways to get the same result. Easiest is Edit->Fill in this case |

To fill an active selection with the foreground colour, press alt/opt and delete. Of course, you need to make sure black is the foreground colour first! Press D to set the default foreground/background to black and white. If it's the other way around (often is in QuickMask), press X to swap the colours over. |
