Collage?
Hi there!

A few months ago, I came across a real estate advertisement in a magazine that, when you look at it from a distance it shows the company logo...and when you look closer, the logo is composed of numerous individual photographs of homes that the company has previously sold. Each photo has been properly blended to the shading of the large company logo.

I thought this was a great idea and I've since seen the concept again on a poster. Now, I've come up with a project of my own. My niece and nephew's mother has hundreds of pictures of her kids; many of them are backed up on her computer. She passed away in July of 2004. Tassie was a tremendous lady and was like a second mother to me. The family is worried that since her kids were so young when she died (5yrs & 7yrs) that when they get older they may not have many memories of their mother.

So, what I'd like to achieve is to take those photographs of Tassie with her family and put them as the small photos in the "collage" and have the one big portrait of Tassie, her husband, and her kids as the one big image which all the small photos blend into.

I'm not quite sure how to begin a project like this. I was thinking to first start lining the photos up to make the background composition...but what would be a decent image size to work with? I can see this project could easily become a very large filesize. Also, is there an easy way to blend the small photos to make the large family portrate clear and crisp?

Maybe the Friday Challenge from week 98 would give me some clues...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Chris

The technique you're describing is called Photomosaic. It appeared a few years ago, and was popularized by the poster for the movie The Truman Show.

There's a great free program for the Mac called MacOsaix which does this job very well. I'm sure there must be a dozen Windows versions too!

Thanks Steve! Since your post, I've found a very useful site that has a free program called Andrea Mosaic. It's exactly what I hope to acheive. I'll post this in the links section for others.

Re: Collage?
The ability to use QuickTime movies as the source for mosaics is really good - better than it sounds/ Why? Because movie cameras capture up to 30 images every second. So if you wanted to make a mosaic using your family as the components, for instance, waving a movie camera at them for, say, a minute would get you 1800 source images.

One advantage of the Mac program I mentioned is that it's able to use Google Images as the source. Which means you can specify the sort of images you want to use, and it'll go and find them for you. Most impressive!
