New layer in alpha channel
Can anyone tell me how to put a new layer into an alpha channel? It shows you in the book but I can't follow it!

Cheers
Chris

Re: New layer in alpha channel
Are you asking how to create an Alpha Channel or how to paste in a new Alpha Channel?

Creating a new Alpha Channel is as easy as clicking on the Channel tab in your Layer Pallette and selecting "New Channel" either from the page icon button at the bottom or from the fly-out arrow at the side of the pallete.

To paste an image into an Alpha Channel you have created previously Ctrl+A on the image to "Select All", Edit>Copy or Ctrl+C, create a new Alpha Channel in the Channels Palette and Ctrl+V to paste it in.

Hope that helps

Hi Rufus/Maiden
Will try this later - but one thin's just occurred: does it work with a photographic image as well, or just artwork?

Works fine with a photograph but it will turn it black and white.

An interesting emboss technique will involve copying a photo to the Alpha Channel and in a new layer fill with 50% Gray and select Filter>Render>Lighting Effect... from the menu and where it says "Texture Channel" select the Alpha layer you just created and adjust the slider for the best effect.

have fun

I've put the shot into an alpha channel, and I'm stuck! What do I do next?

Click on the Layers tab in the Layers Palette and fill a layer with 50% Grey then go to Filter/Render/Lighting Effects and where it says 'Texture Channel' select the Alpha Channel you created and you will see an embossed image appear in the preview window - if it's faint play about with the Lighting settings and position and the slider where the checkbox for "White is High" is.
