Creating Actions: How to make text size relative to image size?
I sell a few things on ebay and I don't like it when people steal your images for use on THEIR auctions.

I'm trying to create an action that puts a line of text on an image. I want to use it for doing multiple images of varying sizes.

I know that setting the ruler units to percent helps keep some things relative to the image size, but it doesn't help with text. The text always appears in the original size I created the action.

Is there any way around this?

Well if text doesn't scale to image size why not try rasterized text or some form of graphic copyright symbol?

I have found the same issues when creating a copyright for images used as proofs. You must always ensure that the Action is being applied to the same size image and in the same format, to ensure the batch works correctly. Therefore an Action to place 'proof' across an A4 Landscape image @300 PPI, will not work for an 8"X12" image in portrait format. The same issues seem to happen when you use shape layers.

I would guess that you will need to bring every image into Photoshop to adjust levels etc, or crop, so a good solution may be to produce your own brush, so that text or even your signature can be applied easily.

Create a new file at say 600 X 600 pixels with a white background at 300PPI. Scan your signature and bring into the file and resize. Use levels to ensure the background of the scanned layer is pure white. Alternatively, type some words in black using the text tool.

Flatten the file. With the brush tool selected, go to Select All and then Edit - Define brush. Your new brush will appear in the drop down list. Make sure you save it.

The beauty of this is that the brush is like any other and can be resized using [ or ] and can adopt any colour. Used on a new layer the opacity can be changed to suit.

Hope this helps.

As the images are all going to be displayed on the same format webpage, why not look at building a "resize to width 600px" (for example) stage into the action before applying text.

There is also software which will batch convert photos to overlay a fine pattern of text across the whole photo-although having seen this in use, it does look a little messy, and not ideal for photos that you are using to promote a product... but it might be worthwhile thinking about creating a pattern that is text based, and fairly sparse, that could be applied to all images as an overlay or emboss using an action. I will have a play around and try and come up with an example.

The defined pattern -

then it's just a case of opening your desired image, reducing the size to 72dpi, creating a new layer, filling with the pattern, and setting the layer mode to "Colour Burn" at 25%

Heres the result

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I guess for web based images the easiest solution will be to include a resize in the action before the text is added.

I might look into JS though. I am sure using that you get access to the image dimensions.
