Repousse Reflection
Hello, Have just done some 3D letters in Repousse and wanted to reflect them. It didn't work transforming, so in the 1st image I typed the letters again, flipped them and then applied Repousse and tried to match it up; which nearly worked. In the 2nd image I typed it, copied it and flipped it then applied Repousse to the image and the reflection together, which again nearly works, but you get some funny shadows. Question is, is there any easier way to do this? ![]() |

Re: Repousse Reflection
Interesting. Both clever solutions, but I can see why they might be difficult to make work. Let me have a think about this one! |

Re: Repousse Reflection
OK, I've found a solution. It's not straightforward, but it does the job. If anyone can think of a better approach, please let me know! First, create your lettering and use Repousse to extrude it. Don't change the default angle for now: ![]() Then duplicate the 3D layer, and duplicate it again so you get three versions. Select two of them in the Layers panel, and merge the two together using 3D > Merge 3D Layers. You now want to manipulate just the copy, so select it in the 3D panel: ![]() Now choose 3D > Repousse > Edit in Repousse, and drag the blue rotation wheel (it will highlight when you get near it) to rotate the copy 180 degrees: ![]() Then drag the blue arrow down to shift the whole thing downwards. You may need to slide it back a little with the green arrow as well: ![]() Now exit Repousse, and use the 3D Rotation tool to turn the assembly to the angle you want. Make a note of the orientation settings - I did this by typing them on a new text layer: ![]() Then take the original lettering layer, switch to the 3D rotation tool, and type in those settings - it should align perfectly. Move this to the top of the layers stack, and lower the opacity on the assembly beneath: ![]() Phew! |

Re: Repousse Reflection
My apologies for not getting back sooner, but have been trying it out. Although I still can't get the letters to line up when I rotate the copy; more practice required I think. I found it very interesting that when you merge 3D layers there are actually 2 items there that you can 'play' with. I did find the shadow thing still wrong, particularly on the C as shown by the arrow, so by messing with the lighting I adjusted that, and also at the same time it darkened all the underside of the reflected letters, which helped it. Many thanks Steve. I can see I need to play with 3D a lot more! ![]() |

Re: Repousse Reflection
That's a really good result. Part of the problem is that letters with curved bottoms - S, C, G, U - actually stick out below the baseline. It does make lying the text flat on a surface a trickier proposition! Adjusting the lighting seems to work perfectly here - good move! |
