Im being really stupid.
I am trying to select the text to refine the edges in the neon text tutorial from How To Cheat In Photoshop CS4. When i press ctrl and click the thumbnail it wont select the text it just keeps selecting the whole layer. What am i being so stupid about? |

Are you sure you're selecting the right layer? |

Yes. I am new to photoshop but i havent had simple trouble like this before. 
The lettering layer is selected, i am then holding control and clicking on the thumbnail and the marching ants are appearing around the outside of the layer. I havent changed any settings and had no problems doing the explosion a minute ago but for some reason this just wont work. |

Thanks for the screenshot - that really helps. It seems that you've somehow merged the text in with a white layer. There are two ways this could have happened: 1. You could inadvertently have typed the text, made a new layer, filled it with white, sent it behind the text layer, and merged the two together. This seems unlikely. Alternatively... 2. You could have the Type tool set to Type Mask rather than creating live text. Either of these possible? |

Neither are possible i'm afraid. I simply opened the document off of the disc that came with the book. I tried restarting photoshop and reloading the pic but it was still the same. I done the tutorial in the end by just selecting it with the magic wand, that was fine. Looks like just a problem with the pic somehow as i went back over the refine text tutorial and it selects everything fine, and also selects it fine later in the neon writing tutorial when making style changes. no problem now anyway, just some random freak problem that was a one off. Thanks for the replies though Steve, ill be back with either some more problems or some finished work that you can all rip apart to help me improve! |
