After effects and slow rendering!!
Ok just a random query here just in case anybody knows. So every time I attempt after effects I get some serious computer slowdown, crashes etc, rendering takes forever. I heard that AE only recognises and uses 2GB of RAM, even if you have 4GB in the machine. Does anybody know if I could attach a few dozen RAM servers to the computer to speed up rendering times?? I mean when Pixar are doing their renders I hardly think they are limited to 2GBs!..
I have been debating whether it is worth buying an 8-16GB Mac, but photoshop and After effects are not taking advantage of this memory then is it worth it?... Any ideas would be helpful thanks!

Hi Artwel

I dont know the answer to your question but I sympathise completely with you

Up to 2 years ago I was running a PC and working in After Effects was near impossible . I spent more time rebooting and cursing than actually creating anything. I decided to convert to a Mac (I was a PC person for 20 years or so). 8Ggb of ram and 3.06 GHz Intel core 2 duo.

The Mac is an absolute pleasure to work with. I run PS AE and Premiere concurrently. Although I still experience problems with AE they are nothing compared to when I was using the PC. My main issues are when Im using Puppet warp, zooms and blurs in AE..Particle world also stuffs it up alot. That is when I have crashes, freezing and rendering takes forever. Would 16GB alleviate this? I dont know.

I would be interested to know what Pixar use for their rendering and what they do to prevent it from crashing.

Re: After effects and slow rendering!!
I expect the best thing is to create the work on one machine and then send it to another for rendering. Also I suppose we will always have computer slowdown as we try and cram more stuff onto the screen! I think the answer is 2 or 3 macs linked together..

Re: After effects and slow rendering!!
Artwel, the answer to your query about RAM usage by Photoshop, After Effects etc. is whether you are using a 32 bit or 64 bit operating system.

A 32 bit operating system (Windows XP/Vista and older Mac OS) can only address about 3GB or RAM whereas modern operating systems (Windows 7 and OSX 10.6, 10.7 etc.) are 64 bit and can address much more RAM (up to 32 GB I think).

In order to take advantage however you will also need a 64 bit processor, motherboard etc.

I now have a 64 bit PC with 16GB RAM and After Effects and Photoshop zip along.

Hope this helps.
