Handles
Case:
I make a rectangle with the Rectangular Marquee tool;
I fill it with a color and decide to change the shape;
I use Ctrl»T and the handles shows around the shape (A)
When I drag the handles (not the ones in the corners) the shape will keep being rectangular;
After an Enter I decide to make a second change.
I use Ctrl»T but now the handles shows different around the shape (B). Now my shape can only made larger/smaller with the corner handles (Shift for constrained) otherwise it's no rectangle anymore. The same goes for Paths.
Question:
Is there a way to get back to the first handles (A)?
I don't mean Ctrl»Alt»Z

Re: Handles
Turn the layer into a Smart Object first. Then it will keep the orientation as it was when you first transformed it.

Re: Handles
And once the layer is a Smart Object it remembers warp settings as well if you have used warp so you can keep going back to tweak them.

Re: Handles
Thanks Steve, BigVern and Artwel. But I suppose the answers includes that ones the transformation in A is done, there's no way to get this handles back. Not in 'normal' mode and not in Smart Object modus. Am I right about that? My question was not about oriëntation or warp settings.

Moreover, when I change A into a Smart Object, I have to increase the Canvas when I want to enlarge the rectangle (to one side). Didn't you see the handles round object A? My question was, can I get the same handles which I get in the first place when I fill a Marquee rectangle with a color and use Ctrl»T? Below you see the same situation with paths.

Re: Handles
Hi Sjef,

Are you transforming the smart object of the layer held inside the smart object?

I just created a shape layer then put it inside a smart object. I then transformed the smart object Ctrl+T (size and rotation) and accepted the change. I then went back to the smart object, hit Ctrl+T and the handles match where I last left them and not a new larger enclosing rectangle.

I am using CS6 ... what version are you using?

Re: Handles
My question maybe is too simple. I know about the benefits of Smart Objects. Maybe it is to blame on my poor English. It has also nothing to do which version of Photoshop. My old version 6 does the same as in version CS6. All I'm asking is: is there (perhaps with some trick) a possibility in Photoshop to get the FIRST handles back. Please try my first example exactly as I described and you'll see what I mean.

As Steve agreed with Artwel: a Smart Object is a live saving tool. I wonder how they used the older Photoshop versions without this tool

Re: Handles
Sjef, I've just created a short video tutorial showing what I was saying but in actions.

It is my first tutorial so it is not great but hopefully demonstrates what I hope you are asking.

Let me know if I am misunderstanding. Your English is brilliant by the way.

BigVern, thanks a lot for this very clear video tutor!! You're great! This is new to me, so I'm glad you did so much effort to show me how it's done. I used to apply Smart Objects as described in Steve's books: selecting the elements on their own Layers and converting them to Smart Objects. In his books I never read a chapter about the BASICS of a Smart Object the way you explained it: FIRST convert to Smart Object, THAN apply any change. It's vaguely mensioned in the HOT TIP column on page 401 in his book 'How to cheat in Photoshop CS6'. And I interpreted this text wrong, I did the changes on the objects first and after that I converted them...

So thanks again BigVern for this nice job and many thanks to Steve for establishing this forum.

Re: Handles
You are welcome Sjef, glad it helped.

As a bonus for me, I have created my first video tutorial (and it wasn't too difficult to do). I may have a go at some more
