Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
Rufus,I prefer Jim's version:
1. her feet being close to the bottom of the picture would indicate that she is quite close to the camera, therefore I would expect her to appear taller. While in Jim's version the photographer might have kneeled a bit, in the Rufus version the camera would seem to be aimed downwards. The rufus version needs more foreground between her feet and the camera.

2. I thing the girl's shadow should be more diffuse.

3. Before too long you can find things to criticize in what I submit.

another thought: perhaps both versions are fine depending on the focal length of the camera lens.

Perception Problems - What do you see?
The major problem with this image is the lighting. The eye can be fooled but it ain't really stupid, it still knows there's something not right. I have roughly hewn a solution to this discrepancy: flip the background horizontally. You could flip the girl-rod-snake, but I assume those in the know would know that she is right handed. You could use a different background.

I agree with most of the comments above and some may still apply. But the fundamental thing is the lighting. This sorted and the scale of the subject doesn't seem too alarming anymore.
