Who likes art???
Hi everyone! I've got a project that requires me to convert 93 photos of homes into drawings for a website. I'm working on the first one and the time spent on trying to make it look authentic is almost rediculous! Does anybody have suggestions or techniques on how to turn a photo into something that looks drawn by hand. I have the freedom to turn the photo into a watercolor, sketch, pen scetch, painting, etc. Just about anything but black and white. |

Re: Who likes art???
My 6th attempt...and still looks like photoshop work. I think it's the bricks (too much detail in them) Any suggestions would be great! Chris |

Just looked at DaltonX's entry. INCREDIBLE!!! The detailing on the bricks are just right. Not too much to look like a photo, and not too little to make it look flat. How could I render something similar? |

Try using Smart Blur on the original photo before you do anything else. It's great at losing detail in areas but keeps edges sharp. |

Just took your original. Smart Blur ------------ Radius 12.6 Threshold 50.2 Quality Low Mode Normal Then duplicataed the layer On the top layer I used Cutout with setting 8, 0, 3 Then set the blending mode of the top layer to hard light. With an action you could knock the lot off in 5 minutes |

The pic came out great...well, to you an me. But it didn't go over well with the client. I've already showed him a number of sketch and painting affects on this house, and none are suiting his taste. Very frusterating. |

This was done with the following: Duplicate the layer. Desaturate. Duplicate the new layer and invert. Set the blend mode to colour dodge. Apply gaussian blur at around 7 pixels. Merge the two layers. Set the blend mode to luminosity. Adjust the layer's brightness and contrast with curves. Duplicate again. apply gaussian blur again, this time around 1.5 pixels. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Slightly different version. Increased the saturation and contrast and added a canvas overlay. _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

WOW!! these are incredible! Thanks David, your concept was excellent! Deke, that looks just like a pencil sketch with charcoal! Very nice. How was that acheived? I've been tinkering over the past 12 hours on my renderings and took a break to check on this site. I'm amazed yet again on photoshop's capabilities! Great renderings guys! |

Re: Who likes art???
David, I was inspired by your process and have modified it to suite the needs of my photos. This was the first time I used invert on a photo. How does that work...I mean, invert and dessaturate to turn a photo into artwork. I would like to understand how Photoshop went through that process and what it all means. Thanks |

Re: Who likes art???
By desaturating, you get tonal values, rather than colour values. Duplicating and inverting then using the Colour Dodge effectively cancels out the image (leaving it white). When you apply the blur, it spreads the pixels on the inverted layer out and therefore it stops being identical and the image starts to show again. It just happens to give the effect of a sketched image. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Thanks David. Now that I understand how that works, I can start experimenting on other uses for this effect. very neat |

well .. Erm ... It was a lot of experimenting with the find edges filter ...then the hue/saturation adjustment in colorize mode and I added some noise along the way to make it look grainy .. Okay Okay I know that was a bit vague ... I'm not sue what I did .. I'm not good at writing this tutorial stuff |

Re: Who likes art???
Hehe, that's alright Dek. I experimented a little with those filters. Thanks for the reply, I've adjusted them a bit and came up with something pretty neat. By the way, I came up with an action that automatically produced the affect that I wanted...Knocked out 93 photos in just under 2 hours! Thanks guys for the help and suggestions. I wouldn't have thought about an action if you didn't mentioned it, Paul. True time saver! |
