Perception Problems - What do you see?
I've tried to place the girl with snake on a new background. Added the shadow, adjust the images using curves and cloned grass around her shoes. However, for some reason(s) the image doesn't look right and I'm having trouble "seeing" exactly what the problems are and how to fix them. If you would, please point out the problem areas. |

Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
1. the trees are in sharp focus but the grass as the base of the trees is blurred. I think that the trees need to appear out of focus as well to give them distance particularly since the girl is so tall in the picture. Actually I think the girl should be made smaller as well as throwing the trees a bit out of focus. 2. selection around the girl is too hard and she looks "cutout". 3. Since the snake shadow is somewhat to the right of the snake, I think that the girl shadow should be somewhat to the right of the girl. I think that that would help solve the fact that she appears to be floating. Also if you would bring the grass up higher onto her shoes, that would help get rid of the floating. 4. I hope Dalton reads this so he does not continue to think that we are all "lovey dovey". Last week I was on the receiving end with my birds...so I went back to the computer and reworked it. 5. Hope my suggestions are of some help. Be sure to post the girl with the snake again. |

Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
The main problem seems to be lighting. It's a bright, sunny day, but the girl seems to have a bluish tint to her. As always, I'd want to put some background elements in front of her to tie her into the scene; tempted to lift that clump of grasses next to her left foot and bring it to the foreground. And as for the snake's shadow - a bit long, don't you think? Look at the shadows cast by the grass in the foreground - they're about half as long as the objects casting them. Otherwise, I agree with Marty! |

Your horizon adjustment really works. The last thing I would suggest, is to adjust the color of the girl by adding a tiny bit of green to counter balance the bluish effect Steve mentioned. Maybe lower her brigthnes as well. _________________ |

Much better. But has her left leg been eaten away by moths? |

Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
something that just struck me: the sunlight would seem to be coming from in front of the girl judging by the front of her hand and jeans. The shadows would indicate the sunlight coming from behind the girl. It seems to me that the easiest fix would be to use the clone tool and burn tool on the front of her jeans and hand |

Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
Any other ways to improve ? well, you could pick one light source and stick to it for starters. She's lit from the right and above (note her arm shadow across her shirt) but the floor shadows are thrown from a left and low light. Her lighting also seems to be a bit dappled on the nearest arm , I'd be tempted to bring in an extra tree in the foreground - to the right (part of its trunk maybe) to give some idea of why her shadow is dappled or add extra dappled shadows on the floor. I'd also question how many times I can say the word 'dappled' in one reply edit: hey Marty we must have clicked 'send' at just about the same time _________________ minds are like parachutes - they only work when they are open |

Glen,I think "dappled" has something to do with horses not arms. |

dap·pled adj. Spotted; mottled. [Middle English, probably from Old Norse depill, spot, splash, diminutive of dapi, pool.] Dapple-gre(a)y is relative to horses as a colour trait. _________________ Leap and the net will appear |

Would the shadow of the snake be so well defined? |

Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
Marty - Thanks, I've attempted to fix the lighting. Glen - Only had one light source. Dang old sun keeps moving on me. Thanks for the observation and suggestion. David's new name is "Webster". Paul - Thanks. You're right I added a little more blur to the snake's shadow. |

Re: Perception Problems - What do you see?
The last picture is much better but I feel that the girl is still too tall, the photographer would still be looking up at her. I adjusted the levels on both the girl and background to get a better colour balance and added shadows for lighting from the top right. What do you think? rufus |
