Capturing motion traveling through the camera
I've been tinkering with my final submission to the Friday Challenge, and came across a curious problem...

How would one go about capturing the motion of the golf club traveling directly through the camera towards the golf ball?

As you can see from my submission, the club seems to be traveling from underneath the ground upwards towards the ball.

Hi Chris,

If I understand your question correctly you could try copying the layer you want to blur then, on the lower layer, apply radial blur set to zoom. You will see a box with some 'zoom' lines in it. This should be dragged to roughly where the centre of your image appears. It requires a bit of guess work as the image itself does not appear in this 'zoom' box.

You will then have to experiment with the amount of zoom you apply. It is probably best to apply the filter a couple of times at a low amount rather than do the whole thing in one go.

When you have finished your zooming go back to the duplicated layer and adjust the transparency to your taste.

Oops, Just noticed one of the "movement" layers should have been hidden.. It's the one that's running into the logo.

Hi Chris,
Maybe a little less transparency on the club head so that you can see the detail in front of the blurred layer.

You mean something like this!

Achieved by four layers of putters: the first putter layer is above the golfball/tee. The Eraser Tool with a soft brush and very low opacity is used on the first putter layer to "paint-in" the golfball.

The second putter layer in identical position to the first is placed just below the golfball layer.

Two further copies are made of the second putter layer and are adjusted and faded.

As a final touch the second putter layer has a "motion trail added to it. This is a plug-in from Alien skin.

Hi Chris
Here's my attempt. I CTRL + J'd a selection of the original golf club, then free transformed it using CTRL + T, making it bigger and angling the shaft a bit. Then I repeated the transformation using CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + T a further three times. I then used motion blur and varied the opacity on each of the four golf club layers. I did the same with a selection of the ball.

You could put in more layers and even paint in some blurry, low opacity 'whoosh' lines, depending on what particular effect you're after. (Looking at Michael's post again, the alien skin filter would give you exactly the 'whoosh' effect I mean)

I have added subtle swoosh lines in a (if you would look at the picture from a side view) circular fashion. Catching the moving club with a camera means you would have to use a flash, and a very fast one, to freeze the motion. As you would catch the club when it has reached it's lowest point in it's path and started traveling up again, there would be no swoosh lines above the club head or the shaft.

I have also changed the perspective on the grass in the foreground and blurred the background slightly as it looks a little bit too crisp to me.

And btw Chris, in your picture you're hitting the ball with the wrong side of the club (I haven't changed this), maybe giving yourself too big a handicap in the competition. Or maybe giving your competitors a chance, when you're going for hole-in-one on a par 5 hole.
