Re: Help
What happened to it?????!

It is saved as scan, so does this mean that it was as bad as this before it was scanned as an analogue photo, or could this be an issue with the scanner / operator error? (The pattern of "smoke" seems a liitle too uniform to be natural to me).

Re: Help
Hi BJ welcome back.
That looks a bad case of something. Try layering the image to make it go darker to see if the image comes through the smoke and then erase the areas of no smoke. Might work but it does look bad.

Re: Help
Instead of hiding or getting rid of the smoke (?); my suggestion is to put her behind a fire and try to make the smoke look natural. Something like this.

Pierre,
haven't you heard about the new party drug, GASOLINE! Besides, if she was sitting too close to the fire she would burn her toes, so I guess the chances of her catching on fire are minimal.

I guess you figured out that my point is to add something to the picture instead of taking something away. Anotther suggestion might be to add some curtain if you're afraid of frying the poor girl. Either way, I would also crop the picture to make the foreground less dominant.

Re: Help
Depending on how hot you want to be, adding a curtain instead of a fire could look somthing like this

Re: Help
Hi BobbyJo,
I think Steve should set this one as a Friday Challenge!

It requires a lot ( a heck of a lot!!!)more work than this to get it right but will this do?

Re: Help
I wonder if that Noise Removal Plugin that Vibeke suggested in the Links section would do this image any justice?

Great works everyone!

Re: Help
I accomplished this by:
1. copy layer and darken with curves
2. added multiple layers for dress, hair and skin and did a combination of cloning and painting.
3. cropping
It needs more work on the ear and adjacent hair

Re: Help
It could be done with a lot of work. I have done a quicky start on the red dress, but there is so much of the information missing in the white areas, I'm not sure it is worth the effort.

Re: Help
Marty,
You asked for comments?
I have just the one and that is that I'm amazed that anyone could get anything from this shot. Even Katrin Eismann's book on restoration and retouching doesn't handle anything this bad!
