Army Men
Half the fun of using Photoshop is picking-on friends & family. In the photo a couple of friends found a rather rare salamander and are attempting to photograph it. I've replaced the salamander with army men but can't seem to get the troops to look as if they really belong in the scene. Any suggestions would be appreciated. http://www.whitecrocodile.com/Picture1862lra.jpg http://www.whitecrocodile.com/Picture1862lrb.jpg Thanks, John |

Re: Army Men
The main reason they are not looking the part is because you have their shadows directly underneath them, as though they are lying flat but they are standing up and the eye picks up on that. It's an overcast scene so the shadows will not be particularly strong. Make them, and the army men, a little lighter. _________________ Leap and the net will appear |

hey... in addition to what david said, you might try dulling the color a bit... take just a little of the saturation out so the color isn't so vibrant. _________________ Drawing attention to what otherwise might be overlooked... emphasizing things that matter. |

Also look at the direction of the shadow. Since the shadow is directly behind, and slightly larger than the army men, they appear to be lying down. Move the shadow out towards the front slightly, as the other shadows in the photo, and you will see a world of difference. (Look at the shadow direction under the arm). |

To further enhance the illusion you might try to obscure part of the army men with leaves. Just use a layer mask to make the leaf appear to be in front of the base on a couple of them. Maybe even move the right most one and put it "behind" the mans hand a little. |

Re: Army Men
The direction of the shadow is certainly a key issue here. But another problem is the fact that all these soldiers have been photographed directly from the side, whereas we're looking at the scene from above. |
