Fire
Hi all Working on a poster for Disco Inferno and need tons of fire. Problem is, can't find any copyright-free shots of fire balls and the like. Is there a way to create fire in Photoshop? Cheers Chris |

Re: Fire
Chris, There were some shots of fire I donated to the HTCIPCS3 DVD. Maybe they can be modified for your needs. Ted |

Re: Fire
Chris, I agree, you should be able to find what you need at sxc.hu. Look for fire images at night. Also, take a look at how Steve uses blending modes in his book to make the flame for the pistol shot. This works great for getting fire with a dark edge for good contrast. Another thing you can try: Create a new project. Fill a layer with 50% gray. Set your foreground color to red, and your background color to yellow, or some variation on that theme that you like Select filter > Clouds Marquee the shape you want Place is above a white or black layer. Exeriment with the blend mode. You can get all kind of interesting affects. |

Re: Fire
The method that Dave outlines is good but I tend to use a Cloud Layer using Black and White with a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer. At one end select White on the Gradient Map at the other Grey - Then from the white side add a Yellow, then Orange, then Red, then Black points. You can makes these evenly spaced or adjust to your own tastes. This makes a deep combustion effect from white hot to smokey grey. Shift/drag out some Eliptical Marquee shapes to create a cloud shape then make a layer mask from the selection: Then add a blur to the Layer Mask to suit: You might want to add some Gaussian Noise, Median, Radial Blur, Distortions etc. That's my tip |

Re: Fire
Hi Chris I found this tutorial the other day. My view is that the realism is great. See what you think. Nick http://www.exguides.org/photoshop-tutorials/fire-cloud.html |

Re: Fire
That's a really great addition to my start Maiden! Another thing that you can try is go to Free transform, and squeeze in one direction, and stretch in the other. I don't have time to look at your tutorial right now Nick, but I look forward to a look at it later. It's really cool the way ideas take off here! |

Re: Fire
Just worked through the tutorial Nick supplied (up to stage 14) and it is very realistic. Notsure if I made a mistake somewhere with steps 4 & 5 - (fibres), but it might be worthwhilehaving a play around with missing these steps out, as I seemed to get some vertical lines in the end result (but I may just have misread an instruction / selected the wrong layer etc). The instructions also require alot of merging of layers,so if you want to experiment with different settings, you will need to save several stages of your project as you go along. The result- |

Re: Fire
Yeah there is a problem with that tutorial as far as the fibers section is concerned. I followed it to the letter and the fading the layer to 65% set to hard light was total rubbish and utterly unnecessary which does lead to an unnatural lined effect - I can't imagine what the author was thinking at that stage as the fiber layer should have been used only for the Distortion effect and nothing more. But it is a very realistic fire effect if somewhat over long and very specific to the end picture which is the ring of fire - which as I can see you like me also got bored before you reached the end lol |

Re: Fire
Yeah BB all you need to do once you've got that far is play with color 'variations...' and maybe some wave or ripple distortion filters to get that extra 'flicker' I took BB's pick and applied what i was talking about to create the below (I know theres a skull in there... it seemed like a good idea) |

Re: Fire
The Ripple Effect works well, Hero Face, but I wouldn't apply it to the smallest flames at the bottom of the image, as it's giving the impresion of a badly laid carpet! Perhaps a feathered selection of the whole page (repainting in the sides and top in Quick Mask Mode) would work,or even duplicating the final layer first and then after applying the filter, run a black to white gradient over a Layer Mask would be a solution? Loving the Skull! BB |
