"Spectoral Flash"
"Spectoral Flash" Hi, does anyone know how to create the type of flash you often get on, for example, the teeth in a toothpaste advert (that "ting" smile). Not lens flare but an exagerated / charactertured flah to emphasise something. Cameras have filters that create this generally all over the picture, but I want to be able to do it selectively, and different types and magnetudes, so a formulaic approach would be better. I can hold "stock" types for the future. Thanks HankC |

Re: "Spectoral Flash"
Hi Hank Is this the sort of thing you mean? If it is then draw a square using the marquee tool and fill with white on its own layer. Now go to Edit>Transform>Rotate 45º and be sure to commit the edit or the next bit won't work. Go back to Edit>Transform>Scale. In the Height box type 1.5% (you might want a slightly different value for this depending on how you envisage your sparkle) and press ‘enter’ to accept the edit. Now duplicate the layer and rotate the duplicate 90º. You should now have a 4 point star. Make sure that the top layer is selected and press Cmd-E to merge the two layers and you can then rotate the ‘star’ to whichever angle you wish. If you create the flash as quite a large size and save it as a psd file you can just drag and drop onto your working image and scale/rotate it as required. You could also duplicate then rotate 45º/scale the flash to give an 8-point star with 4 of the points being slightly smaller. But don't overdo it. I’m sure that there are other ways that members will come up with – watch this space! Gordon _________________ Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana. |

Re: "Spectoral Flash"
Like Gordon said, there are several ways to create this. The information below were done using Photoshop 7.0. 1. One way is using the Paint Brush. There is a brush preset located in the Assorted Brushes called Crosshatch 1 or Crosshatch 4. Its the one that looks like an " x ". 2. Another way is using the Custom Shape Tool. Select the Custom Shape Tool and select the Polygon Tool. In the Options Bar, type in 4 for the sides. Right next to the custom shape tool, there is a little arrow pointing down (Geometry Options). Click on this to bring up more options. For the Polygon Options, makes sure there is no number for the radius. Also, make sure the Smooth Corners and Star are selected. Type in 99% for the Indent Sides By. Now create the effect. Then use a small soft edge round brush and click in the center of what you created. I hope this helps. Luis |

Luis, A nice elegant solution. I had completely forgotten the polygon tool. _________________ Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana. |

Thanks very much Guys, a great help, going to make my own stock of "Spectres". No doubt I'll be on the site again to get the answer to some other Photoshop "mystery". Printed your answers for future referance. HankC |
