Still Brand Spankin' New
Hi everyone, I'm working hard to get better at PS. With the help of Mr Caplin's book and a few others, I seem to be getting better everyday. A friend asked me to make him a CD jewel case cover. He emailed me three photos and a background. The photos were not professionally taken: one was outdoors with, I think, a cell phone...and the other two not done in a studio but in a room with bad lighting. So to start off, I didn't have great photos to work with. Below is what I've come up with but I'm extremely unhappy with it. Can someone give me pointers on how to make it better. I'm not asking anyone to work on it for me, just some tips on what to do to clean it up. I think you have done pretty good with the photographs, but would change the font. The red is to bright for the cover, and the text is really hard to read, and in my mind doesn't really fit the image. _________________ Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. |

Thank you, Vibeke, for the tip on the font. I made a change and even *I* like it better. I'm still not happy with the 3 guys...they don't look like they were in the picture together (which they weren't, but I didn't make it look like they were). Actually, the two on the left look like they're together, but the one on the right looks like I plopped him in. I'll keep tweaking it. btw, Vibeke, I've enjoyed and envied your work here. I think part of the problem is that the people, being in black and white, will never look like they're part of the background. So capitalize on this, and make it clear that they're not on the background: add jagged cutout white backgrounds to the people, slightly larger than they are, as if they've been cut out with scissors. Also, I'd make them slightly larger in the frame, moving the type up to make room for them. Overlapping them slightly with each other would also help the people, if not the background, to look connected. |

Nice, Vibeke. I *do* like the added color. May I ask how you did that (remember, I'm "still brand spankin' new" to PS). Is that sepia tone? And thank you Mr Caplin for your suggestion. I'll give it a try and repost what I've come up with. I'm honored you're even contributing to my amateurish work. I love your book and have learned most of what I know from it. Bob |

Hi Rob, I selected the people, and copied them onto a new layer. Selected the people again in the new layer. Picked 2 colours from the background, and added a gradient to the people. Set the 'people' layer to overlay. that's all.
