100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
Dear Photoshoppers, I tried again but couldn't get the side grip right in the way descriped on page 179. At point #5 the Layer is revealed, but also the bevel disappears (not so in the image of point #5). This option is also mentioned on page 213 # 17 (hiding shadow on the sky). What am I doing wrong? ![]() |

Re: 100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
The same goes for point #8 on page 209. Hiding the Mask disables the Mask AND the Layer Effects. To copy the texture into the Mask I Alt»click on the Mask-thumbnail and hit Ctrl»V. Maybe this isn't the right way? ![]() |

Hi Sjef, I remember having similar issues when I was doing the Grip part. In the end I think I just tried a load of different things to get a not quite perfect result. (This doesn't help you at all sorry! ![]() http://www.howtocheatinphotoshop.com/cgi-bin/simpleforum_files/attachments/Chapter_7___Futuretech2S.jpg |

Re: 100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
Hi Sjef, I too had the same problem, I could never make this work. I too did a work-around, but found it very frustrating. I have just tried again, and again with no luck. Maybe, one day we will find the answer! |

Re: 100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
So, yet another frustrating time. I didn't have quite the same result with the stone wall as I didn't make the cloud effect so small and contrasty, image 1. Image 2 is the effect I got by pasting the cloud layer into the layer mask, using Alt and Ctrl/V; which seemed to work well for stone. Image 3 is what it looked like when I disabled the Layer Mask ![]() |

Re: 100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
Hi Deborah and Artwel, Thanks for your answers albeit not what I was hoping for. Hopefully Steve can put an end to our frustration at this issue, because it seems to me a very nice option. Until now, when I want to get rid of shadows againts a sky for instance, I must create a Layer from this shadow in the FX context menu and clipping mask the untied shadow. A bit like Steve describes in his Chapter 'Location is everyting' (the hot tip column). |

Re: 100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
It appears this thing about disabling (but not quite disabling) layer masks is a bug that appeared in CS4, which was what I used when I wrote the book, and which was cleared up afterwards. So the technique no longer applies. There's a fuller discussion about the issue here if you want to read through that - Deborah, I seem to remember you making a number of useful comments at the time. I updated the Bricks tutorial to work around the issue, and you can download that here. To fix the hand grip issue, though, a simple workaround is to duplicate the layer and fill the grip with black, then move it behind the original grip and enable the layer mask on that layer. You get a very similar effect. Sorry for the confusion! |

Re: 100% PHOTOSHOP - DISABLE MASK EFFECT BUT STILL APPLY LAYER EFFECTS
Thanks very much Steve for your extensive answer, also about the workaround for the hand grip. At last I can say farewel to this problem, although I don't understand why such a smart option is removed. |
