Re: Crit needed
African, you may not want to try this one if you don't have a great deal of time and patience. Here goes.

Make a selection such as the face hands anything skin color.
using what ever tool you are confortable with. Turn the selection into a new layer. Press and hold the ALT key and select CURVES from Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer ( third icon from right at bottom of layers palette) When the pop box appears Check the USE PREVIOUS LAYER TO CREATE CLIPPING MASK box, this is important as it will color only the selection made.
Adjust the Red Blue or Green Channels to the color desired. Here you must have some idea what colors to combine to get the desired results.
Continue to make selections, curves clipping mask, and color your heart out.
On this photo I used 20 layers and 22 curve clipping masks.

Hint: to make white or metal colors use only RGB channel and adjust the very ends

Here is screen shot of some of the layers and the curves box with the red adjusted for skin color. PS>>> some people use HUE/SATURATION COLORIZED to do this but I find that curves do a better job for me.

GOOD LUCK !!!

Re: Crit needed
That's good, MJ, although the thing to watch out for when colouring an image is that natural objects are rarely of uniform colour. Faces especially have a lot of different colours that are quite hard to spot but when they aren't there, your eyes know there's something wrong.

In a face, the cheeks, nose and especially the ears may be redder than the rest. If it's a man, the place where the beard grows can be less saturated, sometimes almost gray. Watch out for the part where the head joins the hair too, it may need to be blended together. Also teeth and eye-whites will usually have at least a little colour to them.

I hope you don't mind, but I had a quick play with your image:

Thanks Tweaknik that is exactly what I wanted. I had forgotten to adjust the eyes and teeth. I never noticed the beard and such on the face. Nice job of correcting. Beard look great. (and I don't mind at all)

Re: Crit needed
Excellent MJ, although the colour seems a little over saturated.

But what Tweaknik says sounds spot-on to me - after all I've seen some of his Photoshop generated images (images painted from scratch in Photoshop) and they are truly exceptional - take a look at his website.

Re: Crit needed
Thank you maiden, yes Tweaknik is correct. I have seen his/her site and the photos you mention are very impressive, however this is an exercise in making B/W a color image. I tried to match the color to an early photo (something on the line of hand colored) that is why I over saturated the color and most likely overdid it. Thanks again for your comments.

Re: Crit needed
I redid the image. Darkening it seems to help some.

Re: Crit needed
Much better MJ, but perhaps a little too dark. Try using the Sponge Tool set to desaturate at about 10% to desaturate rather than darken. Or if you're using Hue & Sat. adjustment layers then move the Saturation slider over to the left to desaturate.

Re: Crit needed
It's important not to forget to colorize those areas that look like they're in black and white - such as the man's hair and eyebrows, and the head of the horse. Leaving them in mono makes them look artificial.

Other than that, MJ, it looks great. I agree absolutely with tweaknik's comments here, too. A couplr of things: the guy's lips on your final image look rather jaundiced. And have you ever met a Mexican with blue eyes?

Re: Crit needed
Thanks for the tip on the black Steve. I didn't think it showed that much (and I got lazy toward the end) The lips went south when I used a Hue/Sat layer and I should have noticed. Blue eyed Mexican?? Hmmm good question.
Thanks to everyone for the crits.
