common website picture sizes...?
hey all!

just wondering for those of you that use ps for website pages what are your most common dimensions that you use...and by that what i mean is so the picture loads up without the viewer having to use the up/down or sideways bars to view the whole picture?

thanks!

800x600 is the basic standard for the website as a whole thesedays it used to be 640x480 but computers are faster with better graphic cards and the old 14" television-type monitor are fairly rare now.

So you can't really go wrong with designing your pictures to fit within 800x600. Macromedia Flash websites are different as they can actually resize the whole frame to fit any size monitor although professional Flash designers will tend to stick to fixed default size to ensure that text is fully legiable and pictures are at their best.

1024x768 is also gaining more acceptance as a standard especially for websites that feature Illustrator/Photoshop/Photography content because of the better resolution and you will find that people interested in such content will generally already have better monitors and graphic cards.

So in conclusion the size of the content is determined by your target audience. 800x600 for most general website/blogs with smaller images, 1024x768 for photographic/art content with better resolution.

The images I post here I tend to keep at about 500-600px wide.

These are the largest viewable frame - give or take a bit - in a web page viewed in a standard browser without toolbars, etc.

At screen resolution 1024x768: 955x600
At screen resolution 800x600: 760x420

Here's my two cents, there are a lot of laptops out there with small 15 inch screens, I still use 800 x 600 as a size. But don't make your web page 800 px wide, use 770 px or smaller. You need to subtract the windows chrome from the 800 px. Each browser and computer platform treat the chrome differently. (The chrome is the scroll bars and frame around the browsers window.)

If you can design a fluid layout, one that stretches to the window's width, you can please more people. Cascading Style Sheets offer a max-width and min-width which add more control to your fluid design. These rules set limits the how small the design collapse and expands. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer for Windows is not compliant to the W3C recommendations for CSS, and does not support these rules.
