cracelure
What would be the best way to add realistic looking cracelure to a photograph or better a photograph that's been worked on in Painter? The photoshop cracelure filter doesn't really work I find (but then it could be me not really knowing how to work it properly).

Many thanks for your help.

Stefan.

Re: cracelure
Like all built-in PS filters, Craquelure tends to be a little crude. Your best bet might be to find a high res image (or go to a gallery) of a painting that has plenty of clear, undetailed sky in it, then copy that texture and place it on top of your photo. There's a lot more to paintings than just the cracking on the surface!

Re: cracelure
The cracelure problem has solved itself. I decided not to use cracelure in the attached DETAIL of an illustration I'm doing, but wanted as an alternative "a frescoe kind of look in a sort of Da Vinci style".( if you get my drift
:

It took a bit of experimenting but I'm quite happy with the result.
The whole thing is about the local council ( in this little town here in Germany) supplying everything from water to dustbins and the chaps on the pic are the people responsible including the mayor.
It's actually my first commission trying to be an "illustrator"

I composited the heads from normal pictures onto bodies I took from Antony Van Dyck paintings. I made sure all the skin tones matched in Photoshop and drew a neck for the guy on the left (as it was covered by a suit in the original picture) and painted that in with the right color followed by the burn tool for shadows.

Then in Painter IX I clone painted the whole thing to give it (you've guessed it) a painterly look. Saved as a JPG. Then I took that result and auto cloned it with the watercolour cloner. Everything goes very blurry and stainy. Exactly what is needed. Then I took these two pics and put them on top of each other in Photoshop and sort of gave them the same treatment as "putting things in glass". Played around with the layer opacities until it looked right in my opinion. Saved as JPG and took it back into Painter to add more texture (like dripping paint, but very subtle--which doesn't really look like it but gives this very nice extra texture) with the Watercolor-Runny Airbrush . Then back into Photoshop for Smart Sharpen which gives it that extra 10% I think.

Just wanted to share that with you. The lowres version loses a bit of crucial detail but I hope you like it anyway.

Cheers,

Stefan.
