rays of light
Here's an image I made from scratch using reference photos. My aim was to get some kind of beautiful light. What would be the best way to get those rays of light properly? I did it with the pen tool, the painted it in so it wasn't too uniform, then gaussian blur and motion blur, quickmask gradients etc. over and over again till it drove me slightly mad. But it just doesn't look the way I want it to.
Many thanks.

Re: rays of light
and just for who's interested here are the reference photos. The clouds on the right I painted (using a "charcoal" standardphotoshop brush ) as wel as the foam in the water (and doesn't it show )

Re: rays of light
Here is my attempt at producing rays of light.
First I created a source by creating a lens flare from over the mountains by filling a new layer with black, changing the blending mode to Screen and adding Filter/Render/Lens Flare. (A tip for positioning the flare correctly is to position it on the background layer and then undo the step. The filter remembers the last position, so when you re-use it on the black layer it is already in the right place.)
Next on a new layer I drew a conical selection with the polygonal lasso tool feathered by about 30 pixels from the flare upto and beyond the base of the image (so that the feather was not applied at the bottom). I then filled this with white and set the layer opacity to about 44%.
Next I copied the layer (Ctrl-J) and used Edit/Transform/Skew to create another ray on the left side and I set the layer opacity to about 37%.

Very Cool. Thanks very much Rufus.

I also realize now that my rays were in completely the wrong place as you would only see them against a dark backdrop.....but I got so obsessed by them that I just wanted them there.

Stefan, I must say your image is astonishing. Whatever the light. It makes me think of the MYST series of computer games... very nice work. I think I am going to have a go at those things...

I like the idea of posting the images you used to create it. I think we, HTCIP forumers, should do that more often. It is something to be proud of I think.

Bonsoir Pierre,

Thanks very much.I'm very happy you like it despite the light not being correct, but hey..that's how we learn.
Didn't have MYST in mind when I did it, but I can see what you mean. I'm just a very big fan of matte painting (actually you could almost call it an obsession). People like Albert Whitlock and the new generation (who do it in Photoshop) like Dusso or Dylan Cole. I put the reference pictures with it because that is something I like to see myself when I'm trying to figure out how it was done.

Re: rays of light
artistic licence allows you to put the lighting wherever you want... and this is one fine piece of art Stefan... I love the colour overlay.. really adds to the drama of the scene..could see that pic hanging up on one of my walls at home... beautiful pic mate...well done!
