Mannequins (1 of 2)
When I last requested advice I was amazed at how many forum members kindly provided it and I gained much valuable learning. As a result of the advice I also got the max 10 points at my camera club print competition. Although I thanked the forum members on the site, I did not acknowledge their contribution when collecting my camera club award. I decided that this would not have been in the in the spirit of cheating!

I now have another quandary that I would appreciate input on. When you initially glance at the attached two pics you see shots of models in lingerie. Half a second later you realise that all is not quite right - they are in fact extremely well made, high quality mannequins that were shot in the window of a London department store! (This is the closest that my wife will allow me to get to glamour shoots – sad isn’t it.)

I do not believe that I could ever make them look totally realistic and in fact this is not my objective - if I succeeded I would only be criticised for my lighting or the way I directed the models’ poses. (I did try to direct them but they took little notice!) All that I want to do is to extend the “half second until realisation” to say two seconds.

In this first shot of the mannequin on its back, I think the legs look incredibly realistic buy the face is obviously the give away. The second shot (see next post) was deliberately under-exposed by one stop (should I do this to the first one also?) but in this instance both the legs and the face appear too unblemished to be real.

Should I just leave well alone or is there some technique such as noise etc that I could selectively apply to the “flesh” to make the shot superficially more realistic. I have tried adding a lens blur to shot 2 but it didn’t do much to the pic.

For anyone who is interested I have posted hi-res versions in a private Picasa gallery at http://picasaweb.google.com/duncansgrove/ForHowToCheat?authkey=r0MCp99mImU .

Incidentally, I have just created a new web site at www.duncangrove.com . Here you will see galleries of Wimbledon tennis pics, S of France pics and other miscellaneous pics – I need to get my hit rate up so please visit and send me feedback!

Sorry it’s a long post – thanks for your interest.

Regards

Duncan

The quickest way would be to find images of real models in similar poses and use selected parts of their skin to overlay the mannequins'.

Interestingly, if you look at the latest ads for Dolce & Gabbana, they are doing the exact opposite - as did Prada a few months ago - by making real (in the loosest sense) people look more plastic.

I agree with David as far as adding texture would help. You could Noise and Blur (or the opposite, gotta try). Getting the texture from a real person is a real nice way to look at it. Clever man this David...

Oh yes, myaybe changing the color of the skin to remove some green?

By the way, I am also a member of my local photo club and our next assignment is Portraits. You just gave me an idea...
