Faking a 3D bag with 2D art???
Hi,

I am trying to make a high res 3D mock up of a bag design where all I have is the 2D artwork. The bag is platic and is comparable to a chips bag you would get out of a vending machine. Here is what I have tried so far:

1. I initially made a 3D model of the bag in Maya and projected the image on the bag. The problem was my computer could not handle rendering the image high res. Note: I will need the artwork at a resolution large enough to print on at 20 foot banner.

2. I have also tried using the 'plastic wrap' filter. I first dodged and burned highlights and shadows on 50% gray and then used the 'plastic wrap' filter. In order to make the bag look 3D I used a free deform transformation. The problem with this was the bag art work was also deformed and did not look correct.

So PLEASE let me know if there is a better way to go about this. I feel that displacement maps could work, however how do I make a believable displacement map? Can you buy prefabricated bag displacement maps, or is that just crazy? If so, where? I feel I am missing some trick or something. PLEASE HELP.

I've included an attachement of the effect I am trying to achieve. As you can see the bags in the attached image all have the same highlights and were doctored the same way. How did they do it?!

Jordan,

This is fairly tricky - but not quite as tricky as you might expect.

Here's the good news: you don't need to apply displacement maps or anything of the kind to the artwork layer. The distortion here can be minimal: it's the shading that does all the work. If you need to distort it slightly, then (assuming you have CS2 or higher) you can use the Mes Warp feature to give a slight spherize effect to it. If you have several bags to create, then turn the artwork into a Smart Object first; that way, you can simply replace it with the other bags' artwork and it will distort in place.

So, on to the shading. I think Plastic Wrap would be overkill here. It might work for a transparent bag, but not this one. Your best bet would be to turn a bag inside out, and photograph it; then desaturate to knock all the colour out of it, and blend it into a desaturated photo of a full bag so you can keep the top band with the hole in it.

Make a clipping mask of this layer with the artwork layer, and set the mode of the artwork layer to Hard Light. By tinkering with the bag layer's brightness and contrast, you should be able to get the effect you want; use a Curves adjustment layer above the bag layer so you can fine tune the effect. Alternatively, duplicate the bag layer and set the duplicate's mode to Hard Light, instead of the artwork layer - and place it above it.

Does this make sense? Sounds to me as if you’re fairly proficient in Photoshop so I'm rattling on assuming you know what I'm talking about!

Steve you are the man!

I posted this question on three other photoshop forums, all of which I got bogus answers to my question. Your answer is genius, I would have never thought of photographing an inside out bag. Brilliant. Thanks for your help, I am really enjoying your book, and finding it extemely helpful. You rock.
