Andy Roddick's radioactive ears
I really feel that Steve Caplin’s book has let me down. I have checked through the contents pages and the index pages of his books and cannot find what I need to know. I have looked under "Andy Roddick", "Roddick Andy", "Radioactive ears" and "ears- radioactive" but not even just a sentence about how to deal with them with them. (I am being rude about Steve since I have never forgiven him for posting on this forum a pic of me looking even more fat and bloated than I really am. To think that I paid good money for three editions of his book and this is what he does to me!) Would any kind forum member be able to give me some advice about the attached image? It was taken at Wimbledon last year and I quite like it but when I ask fellow camera club members whether I should enter it in competitions, they always burst out laughing because Andy’s ears look so strange. I have fiddled around trying all the obvious remedies but have not been able to find anything that works. What would you guys do? The other criticism is that people tell me it looks as if the ball has been placed in the shot post-capture, since Andy’s eyes are not looking at it. Well, I have to confess that I have resorted to this dastardly deceit in the past (well, what is the point in buying a book called how to cheat......) but I do find these comments especially irritating because in this particular case the ball is exactly as shot! Should I (or could I) try to move the eyes? I would appreciate input. If anyone would like to see more of my (award-wining) tennis, Cotes D’Azure and UK images, you are very welcome to visit www.duncangrove.com. Thanks for your interest. |

Personally I quite like the ears, but if you want to fix them. 1.select the background, and then inverse the selection. 2.Use the healing brush, untick aligned, then go over the very birght part of the ear first. 3. Ctrl/Shift/F to fade the adjustment. 4. do the same for the rest of the ear. Good Luck |

Re: Andy Roddick's radioactive ears
Hi Vibeke Within hours of me posting my request for help you have not only told me how to do it but also showed me the end result! I suppose I should be grateful but I am not. A thousand curses on you and all Kiwis - hey lets extend that to everyone in the southern hemishpere. Before your comments I knew what I needed to do, was pretty sure it was possible and guess I was simply too lazy to waste any more time experimenting myself. Now you have achieved what I could not, you question whether I really need to achieve it at all and darn it, I also am now not sure! I too used to quite like the ears as they were but suffered too much ridicule to leave them. Now I see the correction, yes , it does flatten the image somewhat. I am going to have to sit alongside an audience of my peers and listen to a judge slate my work. If I leave the ears as they are he will complain about them. If I adjust them he will say the image is flat and boring. I can't decide what to do, but whatever happens I am certain to stand up and blame this nice lady in New Zealand! Seriously, many thanks for your input which has proivided valuable learning whichever version I decide upon. Does anyone else have any views on the merits of radioactive ears? |

Re: Andy Roddick's radioactive ears
I unreservedly withdraw my curses on those in the southern hemishere. I have just remembered that the Australian tennis open is currently on. Could any of you people down there please just nip round and take a better shot than mine of Andy Roddick? If you then send it to me, I could present it to the judge as my own work and thus take "How to Cheat...... " to great new heights! |

Re: Andy Roddick's radioactive ears
I'm in two minds about this. It's a terrific shot, and part of the appeal is the strong light source from behind. It ads the glow (obviously to the ears), but also on the shoulders and left arm. It is a terrific effect. And the shot still captures the face beautifully (concentration) and there's lots of interest in the folds of the clothing, etc. Of course the ears will glow more, the skin is translucent. But I'd be loathe to get rid of the glow and the white halo effect completely. Maybe tone it down slightly? I love this shot and the fact that his eyes are not on the ball - if the ball was from a serve, it was probably doing well over 100 mph! |

You guys are doing my head in! When I go to a steak restaurant I'm OK - I choose steak. Same with a fish restaurant - I choose fish. When there is both steak and fish on the menu I am flummoxed. First I'm told to loose the radioactive ears, then I'm told to keep them. Whilst I am agonising over these two life-changing alternatives, Ocker comes along with a third one of just toning them down slightly! Can I have some more votes please?! (Seriously Ocker, thanks for the interest and nice comment.) |

Re: Andy Roddick's radioactive ears
It was funny seeing Roddick last night yelling at the Umpire about the Umpires Ears, saying Havn't you got any Ears? Almost as funny as seeing Federer ALMOST lose tonight to Janko Tipsarevic 10-8 in the 5th set only the 3rd round, he has made the last 10 slam finals. |
