Hi there, How to remove jagged edges from scanned text images? http://img2.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?57b0e51637.jpg I have used How to Cheat in Photoshop various instructions on removing jagged edges on my scanned images included refine selection edge and expand the selection by one pixel and then delete – but I have not get any reasonable result. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Try the neon sign approach, that technique was originally devised for tidying up faxed documents. _________________ If you hold on to the past, sooner or later you'll lose your grip. |

Re: Remove jagged edges from scanned text images
This is a tricky one. My approach would be to enlarge the image by, say, 400%, then use the Gaussian Blur/Levels approach to smooth out the jaggies. Alternatively, try this: Select All, then make a new layer filled with white. Enter QuickMask mode (Q) then Paste; the design will now appear as a selection. Exit QuickMask and use Refine Edges to smooth them. The problem here is that you want hard corners in some places (at intersections, and at the ends of strokes) but not in others (the stepping on diagonal lines). If you follow my approach you'll get good smoothing where you want it, but also where you don't. It sounds awkward, but there's really no way to automate the process perfectly. It's always going to be a trade off between smoothness and indistinct joins and corners. |

As you once reminded me Steve, sometimes you just have to do the work of drawing it. I think the best way for something like this might be the old fashioned pen tool. |

Have you just redrawn that, Dave? Amazing job! And what a great tutorial project for using the Pen tool! |

Yes, it only took about 30 minutes. And since I saved all of the paths, it would be really easy to port into Illustrator, for scaling, printing, or whatever. |

If you have Illustrator, it's a 2 second operation to bring the image in and use Live Trace. Like this: |
