Lynx Jump
How could I improve the realism of this image? http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1m6wp/lynx-jump.jpg Thanks, John |

Re: Lynx Jump
Hi John I've studied the image for ages and the two aspects which I think could be modified are:- The shadow under the cat does not look in keeping with the angle of the sun. The shadow cast by the trees top right indicates that the sun is coming from about 1 O'clock, so the shadow cast by the Lynx would appear slightly behind. Also, the light is harsh and I would suggest that the shadow cast by the animal should be more defined. I'm no cat expert, but the way the Lynx is jumping does not look right for some reason. My thought here is that the cat would dip a paw in the water, decide it's not for him and then leap upwards towards the other side. The current angle suggests the cat has leapt from a much higher position. Nick |

I agree with what Nick's said here. From a purely compositional point of view, I'd crop this image so the cat isn't right in the middle: it's the weakest point of any image. Objects in motion should always appear on the left, running into the frame: so try cropping just at the left edge of that black angled tree, say, and see how it looks. |

I agree with the others. Also, the lynx here appears to have a very thick winter coat of fur. A winter scene might be more appropriate. Thomas |
