Help Promote T&T Pride
Plz help me! Newbie to Photoshop CS3 and this forum. I am trying to create an image using a Trinidadian National hero Tubal Uriah "Buzz" Butler with the Uncle Sam Wants You image. Could anyone send me a walkthrough be it video or text  |

This is just a rough idea of the finished image but is this the sort of thing that you are looking for?

BARCYD, It will take a short time but I'll put something together and post it here on the HTCIP website. It's really quite easy to do and involves just some layer masking and a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to get most of the 'hard' work done. May I ask if you have much experience of Photoshop so that I know how to pitch the piece? Gordon |

Mr GKB, I have just recently installed the whole CS3 Master Collection on my laptop. I am just beginning to tinker a bit. I kind of understand certain elements such as "Making Selections with the Pen Tool", "Basic Hue/Saturation techniques" and Basic work with Vector shapes". I have the HTCIP pdf manual though and I have now started reading it. My whole life I dreamt of being an Artist, but there was on one problem, I could not draw to save my life. Photsoshop CS3 has now given me the opportunity to fulfill this dream. Hopefully with your continued support and my diligent reading and application, I will at last attain my dream. |

Barcyd, These are the steps to create the ‘Uncle Sam Butler’ image. Open both the ‘Uncle Sam’ image and the "Buzz" Butler image in Photoshop. Using the ‘Magnetic Lasso’ tool carefully cut around the head of "Buzz" Butler and copy it. Now paste it into the Uncle Sam image on a new layer. Scale and rotate it until it is in position. You can align it by reducing the opacity of the layer and position it so that the eyes line up with Uncle Sam’s. Put the opacity back 100% when you have done this. Create a Layer Mask and, using a slightly soft edge brush with black, erase the top of Butler’s head to the brim of the top hat. Erase around the jacket/shirt area as necessary. Now hide Butler’s head and, again using the Magnetic Lasso, trace around the pointing hand. Make sure that the Uncle Sam layer is highlighted and then press Ctrl-J (Cmd-J if you are using a MAC) to make a copy of the hand on a new layer. Move this layer above the head in the layer stack. Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue Saturation and clip this layer to the new hand layer so that it only affects that layer. Move the ‘Lightness’ slider to -36. This will darken the hand to a realistic shade. Now go back to the head layer and again go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue Saturation and clip this layer to the head layer. Click on the 'colourise' option. You need to do this because the original 'Butler' image is in Black & White. Set the readings to Hue = 22, Saturation = 31, Lightness = -48. Click on this layer’s Hue-Saturation Layer Mask and with a small, soft-edged, brush paint with black on the beard, moustache and eyes to bring back the white hair and whites of the eyes.
