NREY
Greetings dear fellows. You know, I am constantly being inspired by some of the artists on Flickr. The reason for this post is, I was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of internet tutorials on creating surrealist images like those from N'REY. I briefly looked through Deviant Art, but don't really know where to look. Here is what N'REY does... http://www.flickr.com/photos/nrey/ The images that most grab me is 22:05, Paint, Transformer but most of his stuff is pretty awesome. It reminds me of a similar artist Yves Lecoq... http://www.flickr.com/photos/yveslecoq/page2/ I have a fascination for these high contrast atmospheric BW's from both these guys, who are obviously both very good at what they do. What school are they from? I would dearly love to know how to create something along the same lines. If anyone knows of any web text tutorials (deviantart etc.) I would be grateful to be pointed towards them. Maybe one day I will be able to create something like my good Flickr friend Giuseppe Parisi, who is in his own tree. Though digital matte painting is a long way off. http://www.flickr.com/photos/roger_taylor_85/ Many thanks Scott |

Re: NREY
There are certainly some impressive images there. But it's not as if they're all in the same style, so it's hard to give general instructions. Basically, what you see here is what you get: it's just a question of being painstaking about detail! The real cleverness is in the ideas. |

Re: NREY
Thanks Steve for the reply. I agree, the styles are quite different. The only constant with Yves & NREY is that dark twisted sense of surrealism. With NREY, it's the ideas, manipulation and execution, especially with "22:05" & "Paint" How this is done is way beyond my expertise, but all I need is a starting point where I can try for myself and learn. With Yves (& Michal Giedrojc) it is not just a simple case of cutting and pasting montages, it is rather creating that sense of atmosphere, look and mood. I've played with Render>Light & vignetting but it just looks rubbish. If you (or anyone) do come across a related tutorial please let me know. Thank you. Rgds Scott |

Re: NREY
The Yves montages look like HDRI - High Dynamic Range Images, a photographic technique whereby multiple exposures of the same scene are combined to produce additional depth and texture. You can simulate this in Photoshop: First create your montage as normal, then make a Merged Copy of the whole lot. Desaturate the copy, and experiment with different light modes - Hard Light, Soft Light, Overlay. You'll find these increase the intensity of the image, producing more or less the effect you want. If the effect is too strong with Hard Light mode especially, try lowering the opacity of the layer or using Shadows/Highlights to reduce the contrast of the layer. Tell you what - why don't you post an image, and we'll see what we can do with it? |

Re: NREY
Thanks Steve Aye, I am familiar with HDR. I use Photomatix to combine 3 exposures to make mine. Not sure if I follow the best way to do it but I've been happy with my HDRs up to now. I usually fire 3 NEFs into P'matix to generate HDR and tonemap using details enhancer then leave all the adjustments to Ps. What I would like to do is open each NEF in ACR, tweak then open in Ps then tweak some more, do that with the other two NEFs then 'Merge To HDR' then tonemap in P'matix My P'matix is standalone so unsure about the correct procedure to follow if I wan to follow the steps I just detailed. (*gasp for air), but that's a whole new story. Back on topic. Yves, yes I can see they are HDR BW, something I believe I could attempt and practice. As for montage HDRs in Ps, I find that the Tonal Contrast feature in Nik Color Efex is very good at creating this effect (at least on normal photographs). Perhaps even better that tonemapping. With NREY, it is different. I have no clue where to even begin. His "Paint" for example is beyond my comprehension. My ideal/goal tho, as I described earlier is to achieve the atmospheric feel, mood and look that Michal Giedrojc gives to his images. http://www.flickr.com/photos/28711308@N05/ I can see the high contrast, foggy look, feathered vignetting and (pseudo?) long exposure thing going on. It's just a case of doing something similar without it looking naff lol. It's the foggy look I like. Adds etherealism. I believe if I can wire that then I stand a chance of 'emulating' Yves & Michal, before finding my own feet. As for NREY, well,... time will tell. He is (like Michal) a DeviantArt member so maybe there's something somewhere there. If you spot something I might like please, please drop me a link. Many thanks Scott |

Re: NREY
Here is one of mine, this is a textured HDR. You might need to desaturate it tho. I note that the added texture here has played with the light already somewhat. http://www.flickr.com/photos/psychedelicamphibian/3316643903/sizes/o/ Rgds Scott ps this also still leaves NREY, I'd like to know whats going on there. With "22:05" my guess is, hes taken the digital clock, added a white smoke on a black background as a layer set to Screen. The some white water drips also on a black backgrounf set to Screen, but the fine detail to gel it together is lost on me. |
