Reflection on a glass Sheet
So here is my image, it's a sort of montage between a photo of me and a restoration of the same photo using the degrunge technique (and for whoever told me about that on this forum: Thanks for putting me on the right path!) My main focus here isn't that the manipulated photo of me inside the glass sheet isn't that convincing, it's that the glass sheet doesn't really look like glass. Thanks to the shadow, it looks like it's rasied above the normal photo, but it doesn't look like there's any glass there, how do I do this? I've tried a lot of things, manually putting bits of white paint on it and changing the opacity, covering half of it with white and changing the opacity, using a lighting filter over the top of it using masks, but none of them really worked, and the ones that had a chance of looking at least a little convincing were so bright you couldn't see the manipulative picture I did inside the glass sheet. I'll give a little background on what I want the picture to be like, what it is meant to be, is a glass sheet hovering above the regular photo, and through it, you can see a perfectly cleaned up version of it, like those drunken glasses you see on Cartoons sometimes (the Simspons did it) Anyway here it is, help would be awesome, remember you can ignore the photos themselves, I just need the glass effect, thanks in advance. |

Hi Jono Glass will usually reflect something, so if the photo is intended to be sitting on a table, for example, you could add low opacity image of a ceiling and light. I would reduce the heavy shadow. Nick |

Re: Reflection on a glass Sheet
Hi Jono, I agree with Nick about a reflection of something, and the shadow should be less, but sharper. As the glass has a thickness you could show that, by painting in a blue/white line on the top edge and a darker line down the vertical edge. Also as the glass has a thickness when you look at the vertical edge there will be a small bit of the image you can't see properly, and then the left side of the image will be very slightly offset. Hope this is clear! |

Re: Reflection on a glass Sheet
Right, added quite a few edits to this image:- First I grabbed this picture off Google - http://www.thedancingdolphin.co.uk/View%20of%20Sitting%20Room%201.jpg I did some funky stuff with the picture to put it into the glass reflection, after of course flipping it accross. Then I added some gradient lighting on an Overlay layer, then in another layer added a high density Lens Flaire, then basically I created the glass depth. I've also lowered the opacity of the shadow, I'm still considering putting a hand in there to hold the glass but my camera always blurs my hands way too much if they're too close to the camera, and it would be a challenge to change the lighting and add shadows and stuff. Hey it's going into my portfolio anyway, here's my finished image. |

Re: Reflection on a glass Sheet
I would have taken the shadow out completely. I've never seen a piece of transparent glass that casts a shadow. I'm sure it would cause some effect but not a shadow. I think the image of your face as seen through the glass is too strong. With all that light reflected off the surface of the glass wouldn't your face look weaker? Same with the pattern on the clothing next to your head. It looks brighter THROUGH the glass than it does directly. We can see a bright flare coming off the top right of the glass. This should reduce what we can see through the glass, not allow us to see more. |
