Trying to add ethereal, ambient, atmospheric touches to an image.
Hallo I would really love to know how to add a certain atmosphere to an image. Specifically, toning a colour image, giving an atmospheric light to the image and texturing an image. Now I think I have the texturing side worked out (by adding a textured image to the original layer and using overlay or multiply blending modes), so this just leaves toning and light. Below is a small list of images to various artists on Flickr and I have set a brief description of what I like beneath each image. First one is this from the ever impreassable Erik Johansson http://files.myopera.com/best-persia2/albums/873494/Best-Persia.Org_erik_johansson_9.jpg Ignore the Esher-esque stairs, its the colour and light that got me liking this one. I sense maybe a flypaper texture was added. Can anyone break it down in bite size steps? -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.flickr.com/photos/marianovillalba/2410744528/ with this one it is the colour tone and the light. I've seen a lot of films (mostly dark action/horror) where this kind of toning is used. An almost desaturated dark look. -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.flickr.com/photos/jennyterasaki/3807904254/ This one's from Jenny. again it's that mild light and desaturated look. Sadly when I try these steps it just looks naff. -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.flickr.com/photos/2eyes_photos/3469792563/ One from Sabine. Again I think a flypaper was used here as a texture, but what I like is the minimal colour and muted light. Can anyone simplify? -------------------------------------------------------------------- http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_T0Q3xR4Xrr4/Sbj1793OaYI/AAAAAAAATGY/k2ZeMhtlWY0/s400/19.jpg Lastly (I don't wnat to bore you) from Erik again Colour and light and tone appeals very much to me. So it's all softe light look, muted colours and soft texturing. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I understand the cross processing techniques (filter in Color Efex), but rarely use them. My tools are Color Efex Pro and CS3. Any pointers please ladies and gents? Thank you Scott |

You could always try my Hard Light layer approach - duplicate image, desaturate, Hard Light mode, adjust Shadows/Highlights as needed. Alternatively, why don't you post an image you want to work on and we can give it a go? |
