Blur help
Thought i'd make my first post an image problem.
i've been playing about with this montage stuff for a while and created this image last year. there was a lot i didn't know and couldn't get right so i bought how to cheat in CS5 as a christmas present for myself, great book. helped me put a lot of images right.

my problem with this one is the prop on the spitfire, i'm trying to blur it slightly but i can't get it to look right.
any ideas would be appreciated.

EDIT :-
Full size image it's not that big.

Re: Blur help
First of all - welcome to the forum. And that's a terrific starting point: the colours, the texture of the clouds, the fire, and above all the composition, are excellent. All it needs, as you point out, is the blur on the propellers.

1. Select one of the propellers (or just the nose cone and one blade, if you prefer) and copy it to a new layer. If you only selected one blade, use this to rebuild the full propeller.

2. Make a selection that's just slightly larger than the propeller, with the mid point of the selection being exactly on the centre (hold alt to draw from the centre out).

3. Use Filter > Blur > Radial Blur, setting the blur type to Spin rather than Zoom, and experiment with the settings until you get the blur you want.

4. Now the tricky part. You need to remove the original propellers from the image. The best way is to make a new layer and use a combination of the Clone and Healing tools (set to content-aware), with Use All Layers checked on both. In fact, you don't need to be too precise here, as the new blurred propellers will hide a lot of rough cloning.

Do let us see the results! If any other forum members want to have a go at this one, it's an interesting exercise.

Re: Blur help
Settled on an amount of 30.

looks ok to me, i'm not sure yet whether to blur the germans prop or damage it a bit.

Re: Blur help
Yes, that works well. Don't you need to add some blur to the Messerschmidt propeller as well?

Re: Blur help
Or a bit of both? I think it looks unnatural if it isn't spinning at all.

Re: Blur help
Can't seem to get the blur right on the german.
I had to rotate the prop slightly, it looked terrible against the flames.

Re: Blur help
That one's about finished then.
Thanks for all your help.

It's amazing what photoshop can do with a couple of airfix models.

Re: Blur help
Nice one, you must be from Halton or somewhere around.

I would say that the look of propellers depend on what moment you want to show.If this ze germans plane got shot engine this propellers should stop working.About damaging it ,I'm not sure if it was so easy .I'v seen pictures of it on ground and even then they just got bend.More and more dark smoke - sure.I may blow the engine cover off and do couple of ammunition holes on one of the wing.At least its perfect one shot but I can see 303 number on Spitfire. Keep it real or make it up.Thats what is cheating about.
I may have a go with it later on 50/50.
