Removing Reflection?
I captured this snake yawning, but unfortunately also captured the reflection of the sign. Is there a method to remove the sign's reflection?

Thanks!

John

Re: Removing Reflection?
John,

Do you just want the snake and no reflections/words? They are duplicated at the moment? Or remove the duplicate of the words? Or just the words?

I see several solutions/methods either way ,

Re: Removing Reflection?
Try this to remove the sign reflection. I'm sure there are other ways to do this, but this one looks fine.

1. Go to the Channels Palette and select the Blue Channel. As you can see, the sign is gone. Now select the document (Ctrl A) and copy it (Ctrl C).

2. Go back to the layers Palette and create a new layer. Now Paste (Ctrl V) the Blue Channel, into that new layer. Change the Blend mode of that new layer to Overlay.

3. Now add a Levels or The Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer and try different settings until you find something you like.

OR

1. Use the Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer and select Monochrome. Move the Blue slider to 100.
2. Change the Blend Mode of the adjustment layer to Overlay.
3. Now add a Levels or The Brightness/Contrast Adjustment Layer and try different settings until you find something you like.

I hope this helps some.

Luis

Re: Removing Reflection?
Ingenious solution, Luis! Surprising how well this works.

Everyone else - if you haven't tried Luis's approach, I suggest you give it a go to see what happens.

Wow, Luis! That is amazing. I have never really got the hang of channels so this is a revelation. Thank you very much.

Angela,

A pretty good intro to Channels and how powerful they are is 'The Photoshop CS2 Channels Book' by Scott Kelby. Don't worry about the 'CS2' bit as Channels are the same whichever version of Photoshop you are using.

Once you have read this there are other books available that go into much more detail such as Katrin Eisman's 'Photoshop Masking and Composition' which will take you into areas such as creating Channel masks.

You can stop at this point but, after digesting all that, you might like to wander over to Image>Mode>Lab and try to get your head around 'Photoshop Lab Color: The Canyon Conundrum and Other Adventures in the Most Powerful Colorspace' by Dan Margulis. This is pretty advanced stuff and is NOT light bedtime reading. You really have to pay attention with this one as Lab bears no relation to the comfortable world of RGB and you can quickly lose the will to live. But, given the right image to work on such as landscapes, you can produce some remarkable work using Lab Channels.

Hi John,

Personally, I feel much more comfortable when I can see a reflection on glass between me and a snake .... any snake!

Thanks for the info. I do have Katrin Eisman's 'Photoshop Masking and Compositing' but I haven't looked at it for many months. I must get it out again.
The Channels book sounds promising and perhaps I should buy it but I do have issues with Scott Kelby's writing style...

Re: Removing Reflection?
I know what you mean Angela re SK

Katrin's book is great. 4+ years ago I completed most of her tutorials I was interested in and learnt a lot. Some later versions of CS make it a bit quicker, but not as precise or give you understanding how the algorithms, with channel, . masks, paths, etc work. And of course you can do all of this in PS7 I can mess around with mask and channels at free will now, .... well, I have to check sometimes :) .

Transparency results do my head-in. they actually work! I did it with one of my FC entries with the ants. insect and mess.... and it worked..... Steve even asked me a question afterwards

Re: Removing Reflection?
Luis, Thank you very much it worked remarkably well.

Gordon, It's just a harmless eastern kingsnake. These snakes are ophiophagous (feed on other snakes) and often consume venomous species.

Your first solution is ingenious. It worked really well.

Thanks Gordon for the book suggestions. I have Katrin Eismann's books but not looked at channels in there. Martin Evening's book for photographs also covers channels.

Great solution Luis.

I have terrible trouble remembering all this stuff and referring to books and notes is the only way for me.
