Need a spot of advice on this one.
I tend to doodle with images when i get an idea.
I came up with this but it feels as if something is missing.
I like the desolation but I think the horizon needs breaking up, I tried a mountain but wasn't impressed.

Maybe a rundown shack ?

Hi Dooley. I think you have a great picture creating a sense of windswept isolation. It also could feel like late autumn. Maybe a flight of migrating birds in arrow formation leaving the area balancing the boat that has to stay. Maybe placing the birds on the top third heading out right of picture?

Hope this helps.

Looks good Rob.

-Broken down shack would be good, or maybe more appropriate if include it as part of a broken down peer. Estuary reclaimed by sand-dunes and sea retreated. That could break the horizon and add sense of depth, with perspective and aerial perspective.

- I think there are signs of a small river or tidal flooding in there. You could reposition or add another, but that does not address horizon issue.

-Maybe in the distance, breaking the horizon, include wreck of large beached ship.

If have any more thoughts, will fwd. Sure others have ideas too. If you get a solution you like, hope you can share.

Two good ideas there, thanks.

I have some images of a wrecked pier, I could probably fit that in to the right and add a few birds to the left heading towards the centre top of the image.

There's no end to all this once you start.

I was also thinking similar to Ted. Where I lived in Cork by an estuary, we often had the migrating birds flying in swarms before heading to/from Africa. They danced like dynamic clouds before roosting at night . I'm sure you've seen on TV at least.

I like the sense of isolation, so not too complex, need some open spaces.

A quick update, I tried a flock of birds but it looked too busy.

I'm not sure about the pier.

Can you make the pier match the boat or maybe try it slightly low on the horizon to break up the line.

I tried it lower, just didn't look right. I even tried cutting it's legs off.
I put it where it is to give the impression of depth.

Not sure what you mean by match the boat ?

Hmm. Here's the other thought.

Michael, How do I upload two or more pictures like you manage to?

Ted, have you tried using Ctrl (or Command for Mac?) to select more than one pic when browsing for your first attachment. Haven't tried it.

The forum only allows you to upload one picture at a time. If you want more, then you need to host them elsewhere - such as your own site, or photobucket - and then link to them in your forum posts, using the img= tag (see the Help button).

Dooley, your image looks terrific. I like the strong diagonals. I'd flip the bird and put it on the other side, for better balance.

If you can be bothered, I'd consider making the image wider and flipping the boat horizontally, so that the diagonals point towards the vanishing point rather than off the edge of the page.

Ok, width increased, 1st time i've used content aware scale for anything practical.
I didn't even notice the boat was facing the wrong way.

Nearly there now.

That looks really great now.

Very minor point, just a thought(?) I was thinking aerial perspective, but doubt necessary now. If you did ~10% ish at the most to match the grass shadows on same plain.
