A3 Prints
Hi All Just started printing (or trying in earnest) using Lightroom 3 and CS5 PS via my 3800 but can't make it fit. So I'm printing out to A3 portrait but the mount I want the image to fit has been cut to 29.2 x 39.3. OK I could crop to that size but I'm losing too much in the vertical and it's ruing thee pic. I guess I'm trying to fit a square peg into a round hole but having a problem seeing daylight on this one. Plus I like LR3 for printing but do not have a clue to setting up sizes, measurements etc. Any advice would be greatly welcomed. Regards Paul

Re: A3 Prints
Paul
I use Lightroom 3 for image adjustment, but have never tried printing because CS5 offers all the control I need. Anyway, it's far cheaper to use a lab. I use a firm based in Manchester and they will produce excellent results and offer great value. An 18x12 inch print for about a £1 is excellent and it would cost me that in inks and paper, notwithstanding the pain of obtaining colour accuracy.

So back to your issue, with an A3 being 29.7 cm x 42 cm. you are trying to 'fit a square peg into a round hole' and you're going to have to lose something somewhere.

The only solution I can think of is to set your image within a new file and scale it, so there's a border around the image. You can add a feint keyline stroke around the image if you wish and this can be very effective. In the image I've attached, I created a file to the same aspect ration as your picture mount and then created a grey layer to an A3 ratio. By setting up the rulers to percentage, you can centre the image using guides and then 'clip' your image to it.

Hope this helps

Nick
