Trouble with Reflections
For some time I stared at the Movie Sign in the Friday Challenge and finally knew I was NEVER going to figure out what the reflections should look like. Nothing for it then but the practical method, so I found a coffee mug and printed off some brickwork on A4. See below. Now the problem was: how to cut out a crescent from the brickwork where it touches the bottom edge of the mug, flip it horzontally and and then align the facing edges. I spent a very long time using Image Warp until I got a result I am happy with. My question is this: without using any add-ons did anyone manage to solve this problem in less than 30 minutes? And if so, please share the knowledge. Thanks.

Re: Trouble with Reflections
That's an ingenious approach, Michael! And I'm most impressed with your cylindrical silver coffee mug.

Re: Trouble with Reflections
Nice approach on the mug --- I too knew I would never solve the refection part on the FC so I just employed a best guess approach -- and yes I pondered it for a couple of hours finally concluding just try to make it convincing as the average person would never know anyway

Re: Trouble with Reflections
I had to attend my Godson's wedding in Bristol this weekend, so won't have a chance to do the challenge this week. I had pondered with this and my solution was going to be to hold a shiny steel saucepan against the house and see what happened. Looks like we were thinking along the same lines.

Frank, Nick.
Thankyou for your comments. Any ideas about how to produce that reflection without using image warp, or copying and pasting a brick at a time (dreary work) ?

Re: Trouble with Reflections
Mariner,
I ended up doing it brick by brick as I couldn't seem to get sections to warp properly -- the trouble is I didn't know where I wanted to go for sure - I thought of Nick's idea to photograph some curved shiny metal against a brick wall but didn't have any such material

Re: Trouble with Reflections
I don't know if this is the correct way to create reflections. Please note that I'm using Photoshop 7.

Also, if you are using the latest version of photoshop, you can try using the 3D feature. I know nothing about this so I can't help you there. After studying you image, the thing that came to mind was using the Polar Coordinates. Here are the steps that I used.

1. Created the background image first.

2. Duplicated the background image and have that on a new layer. Then I applied the Polar Coordinates Filter - Polar to Rectangular - Then use the Transform to flip Vertical.

3. Created the Cylinder on a new layer

4.The last step was to move the layer that had the filter applied to it above the Cylinder layer and Group (clipping Mask) the layer.

Thats it.

Re: Trouble with Reflections
here is the same thing only using a grid to show the pattern on the Cylinder. One thing I forgot is that I scaled down the image (duplicate layer) to fit in the Cylinder

Re: Trouble with Reflections
I also used Polar Co-ordinates. Having looked at a few shiny 'cylinders' and their reflections, very few lines lined up, in fact there was only one, all the rest went their own way.
Mariner, it might be the angle you took your image from which makes your 'bricks line up. Different cylinder sizes made quite different reflections.

Luis, Deborah
Great idea. I would never have thought of Polar Coordinates

Luis, good demo, perfect result. I will experiment with that today.
Thanks to you both.

Yes, I agree, the angle of the photograph matters. Especially at the point on the cylinder closest to the lens. The picture changes as you move around it. Tricky, isn't it? I just casually took the shot from an angle that was fairly close to the one in the Challenge and that's what came out.

Re: Trouble with Reflections
You're welcome Anna. I couldn't resist trying out Luis's brilliant solution, so here's one I put together this afternoon.
