Making text look realistic
I have quite a lot of this sort of work coming up. – Take a product = remove existing text; – then replace it with proposed new text inevitably, as this is something that is being kicked about by various Marketing "bods" the text will go through dozens of revisions – so flexibility is important. Equally important though, is making the text look as realistic as I can, given that it needs to follow the shape of the can. I have seen a few different approaches applied to similar projects – spherizing, warping etc – I am just not sure what approach to take myself. Any suggestions on likely approaches to this? Two images attached. One is the blank product (a hairspray in this case) the second has the text on the front – in its basic format. |

Glad to help, of course. But since four of us have taken the trouble to reply to your earlier query about tutorials, perhaps you should acknowledge that before asking for more assistance. |

Re: Making text look realistic
Right, here we go. Here are four steps: 1. First, convert your text to a Smart Object. That makes editing much easier later. Then choose Free Transform, and click the Image Warp button on the toolbar. 2. You need to distort the anchor points so they wrap around the can, and that's the only tricky part. First, move corner 4A up to follow the shape of the can, then 3A and 2A by a lesser amount (the curve decreases as it nears the horizon). Move all the points in column B to the left, again moving the lower ones up a little. It will take some fiddling, but the advantage of it being a Smart Object is that if you want to change it later, the handles will be in the same place you left them. 3. Double click the text layer in the Layers Panel to open the Smart Object in a new window - you can now edit the text and, providing it fits within the original Smart Object bounds, it will wrap around the can in just the same way. 4. To make it look like it belongs there, first load the text as a selection by Command / Ctrl clicking on its thumbnail. Hide the layer, and make a new layer from the can from that selection. Brighten this new layer, desaturate it to some degree, and it should look more realistic. Does this make sense? |

Yes. I think that makes sense. I will give that a try. Thanks very much. |
