Ker-ching… and another copy sold! Thanks, Paul!

Atheana, if you're not using layer masks, you're really missing out on the whole layer interaction/blending thing. It's the best way of hiding, rather than erasing, part of a layer - the advantage being that you can always reveal the hidden portion layer, or fine tune it.

Adding a gradient to a layer mask will fade it away smoothly, just as if you'd erased the bottom half with a big, soft eraser. Except, of course, nothing is irretrievably erased!

You two are in cahoots aren't you? lol ok, at the risk of revealing my true ignorance here... layer masks, gradients, etc etc - they're all in the book right? So if I want to know more...go out and buy the book Atheana...lol I do use layers - that's how I did the reflection of the elephant, but haven't gotten around to masks yet...

Masks are your absolute bestest ever friends (almost as much as 'The Book'). Image manipulation is almost impossible without them - unless, of course you are a masochist and enjoy recreating images time and time again after making mistakes with the eraser!

Layer masks are in the book (featured heavily, in fact).

Here's a quick demonstration....

You need to create a mask. The quickest way is to click the black square with the white circle at the bottom of the layers palette.

Select the gradient tool (k/b G) and pick black to white (although on a mask, you only get greyscale!). Make sure the Reverse checkbox is set, otherwise it'll fade the wrong way. Select the type, generally it'll be Linear.
Click the start point and hold, in the example, the top of the inverted duck. Drag the mouse down to the bottom and let go.

The shadow is similar but obviously, needs to be done at an angle.

I love your rubber duck...lolllllllll Now I know I'm going to sound like I'm blonde here, and honest, I'm not (sorry blondes, no insult intended) BUT...how exactly was that a demonstration? I mean cheers for it all the same, don't get me wrong - just now exactly sure what goes where, if you know what I mean - why do I get the feeling I'm digging myself a very large hole here...lol

If you're going to make comments about an image, maybe you should take time to notice the caption first? LOL
