One I am rather proud of...
This pays slight homage to the petrol pump case study in the book. I had a lot of fun with shear and shading on this one! An illustration relating to the current high ($1.78/gallon!!!) price of petrol in the states.

This montage really came out good. The reflections of the dollars on the pipes work real well and help bring it all together. BTW, what kind of car is that? Carl |

Excellent! You've got the curves and shading just right. Totally convincing! Here's a little test for you: how would you bend the top dollar bill over so that the bottom half curled underneath the top half? |

Not entirely sure I have a solution! It would involve splitting it into two layers and shearing both independently. Tricky to make the curve on the top layer look convincing, though... if you're really interested, I'll give it a go. |

OK, here's a quick curling-under guide. Begin with this rather bizarre Shear curve (1) - it's necessary to get the maximum amount of curvature at the bottom without the bill either side distorting horribly. Then delete the bottom of the bill to leave just the curve (2). Select from the ear (in this case) down to the bottom with the Marquee tool, and compress it vertically to make the curl tighter (3); may also help to smudge the right edge of the chopped bill slightly. Add the back portion (4). Whew! That was trickier than I expected. Still not a beautiful curve, though, and could do with some further work. Your turn! By the way, I don't think I ever said how impressed I was that you bothered to reflect the underside of the top bill in the exhaust. I love that attention to detail!  |
