Something I've done
This is for the tenth anniversary of a Hebrew school I teach at...the flame logo was made by someone else; I drew the candle and stuffs. It's pretty bad, but tell me what you think... ![]() |

Re: Something I've done
I think it looks very nice. I would be tempted to jazz up the text a bit to make the "Celebrating Education!" really stand out and add a bit more excitment to the poster - after all you're 'celebrating' which conveys excitement and energy but black text on white is very formal. If you had some photos of the Ansin school children with big smiles on their faces you could add them to the background - using the poster on a layer above the photo montage set to a blending mode that replaces the white with the photo image. I'll post you an example as soon as I have a spare moment. |

Re: Something I
I know it may sound a bit twee, why not use a pseudo Hebrew font (English letters in the Hebrew style), have a look on dafont. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Something I
![]() as promised here is an example of what I meant - although the way the poster looks is entirely up to you and you have already done a great job. |

Re: Something I've done
Maiden: it's supposed to be used in EVERYTHING-posters, letterhead, the rabbi's stationary-so it's supposed to be almost infinitely scalable and thus a background doesn't work that well. Same with the brightening up "Celebrating Education"-it's supposed to work in both monochrome and color. Trinity: Look above. Pseudo-Hebrew fonts don't read that well when they're really small. Also, I don't know what "twee" means, but that's what it is. ![]() You have NO IDEA what I've had to go through since I've made the actual picture. I have done about 50 variations of text juxtaposition around the candle, so I'd rather not mess with it... ![]() |

Re: Something I've done
OK, a couple of practical suggestions. First, the candle itself is too monochromatic: put a bit of yellow and a touch of red in there to lighten it up. Secondly, the text on a curve would work better all in capitals than in upper and lower case: the font you've chosen is fine, but harder to read when there are ascenders and descenders that get in the way. ...but from your previous comments, are you sure you want suggestions at all? |

Re: Something I've done
Sorry about my previous post; I had just come back from a 2-hour session with some woman in which nothing was done except move the text around. Anyway, it's kind of already sent in, but I did want comments for future reference on making candles. Thanks! ....I looked at your rough again, Maiden, and I actually like the photo...sorry about the crazy negativeness... ![]() -Josh |

Re: Something I've done
It's all right, I've been there. I used to do a fair amount of work for advertising agencies, but however much they paid (and it was always more than I'd expect) it was never worth the hassle: you start off as an artist, and end up as a Photoshop mechanic. Ghastly. There comes a point with this kind of work when you just have to forget your artistic integrity and give the client what they're paying for, even though you know it's wrong. That way, they're happy, and you can forget about it and go on to the next job. |

Wise words indeed, a philosophy that I should take on board, given my tendency to over-embelish the brief ![]() _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Something I
I think that the problem is we try to show people the extent of our talents rather than what the cilent/s expect. They have a vision of how it should look but not the skills or talent to put that into practice - so if we were Granny, they'd always be teaching us how to suck them eggs ![]() |
