Re: experiment
Great image! Were you aiming for a face, or did it just work out that way? Symmetry has a bizarre effect on people, it allows us to see almost anything. Hence the Rorschach tests. Nice technique. Steve |

Re: experiment
Excellent! It would make a good CD cover. A bit Predator-esque. _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: experiment
Wish I was aiming to create a face lol, this was a total fluke, I followed this tutorial and ended up with something that resembled a skull so I simply added eyes to make it appear as a face. I think it would be cool for everybody on the forum to experiment with the tutorial below and see what creatures can be created. Maybe you could do this as a Friday Challenge Steve? http://www.gfxcom.com/tutorials/photoshop/unique/view.php?id=54 Ryan |

Re: experiment
I've checked through that tutorial and, I have to say, I really dislike that approach - do this, do that, step by step, with never a word of explanation of what's going on. Photoshop is about understanding what you're doing, not about following orders! |

Re: experiment
A lot of web based tutorials tend to be like that - the ones I dislike the most is when they don't put examples inline and have links or sometimes no examples at all :/ _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: experiment
I agree Steve the tutorial seems brutish and not akin to helping the reader through the learning curve. I hope my tutorials don't come across that way, but if I do fail the reader in anyway can someone please let me know and I will amend it. Re: experiment
Becky, I think your tutorials work well. The important thing is to make people understand what they're doing, rather than simply following a series of steps. Whenever I give lectures I try to discourage people from taking notes. They need to see what can be done: after that, they can figure out how to do it for themselves. Comprehension is everything. I'm giving a lecture tomorrow at the Apple Expo in Islington, and I'll try to make sure no-one jots down a word! |

Re: experiment
"Put that pen down, Jones and pay attention!" ![]() You've absolutely right, just following a series of steps parrot-fashion will only help you accomplish the effect the tutorial stipulates to really learn the power of Photoshop requires the zest of adventure where you delve in and play about with Tools, filters, blending modes, masks and layer effects, even if what you create isn't what you were after you will have still learnt something in the attempt and may have even created something quite unique that you might want to share with others. I've read quite a few Photoshop books and some are arty and pretentious, some are cliché, some are simply style-cookbooks, some are good foundations for the tools etc. but give no insight into design. But your book is the best one I've come across for being clear, consise and inspirational. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |
