Something else what I did.
This is a themepost for a contest, the original image was just the tree with red baubles.

I added the site name and NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) logo and changed the other decorations to reflect the 3 disciplines allowed, Photoshop, Photography and digital/traditional art.

I was quite pleased with the resulting piece. Let me know what you think!

Very nice David, although the baubles do still look a little flatish, more so the bottom two than the top one which I think works better bacuse the image fades at the edge better if you see what I mean. But that doesn't distract from an overall great image.

I agre with Becky - except that for me, the two on the right look odd, the Photoshop eye is great. Perhaps it's because the more complex the subject, the more awkward the reflection appears? I'd try to go for simpler, iconic images to represent these disciplines instead of fiddly scenes with people in.

The Pixel Addicion lettering works well, though. Like the frosting - you could probably get away with a bit more. And perhaps a sparkle here and there?

On reflection (arf!), I should have made the baubles clear and put the people inside, like a snowglobe. I was just going to use the logos (Illustrator, etc.) but I couldn't think what to use for the photography decoration.

I might have a play, just for academic reasons - the frosting was simply the overspray layer style with a bit of dodge and burn.

Um... how about a camera?

Damn, why didn't I think of that

I was trying to think of an application, to go with PS and Illustrator. I suppose I could have been more inventive and made decorations, like a frosted Wacom, camera and artist's palette.

Hey ho, always a next time

Flippancy aside, I think this is an interesting point. One of my main goals when doing illustrations is to help the reader to get the point as quickly as possible, with as little work on their part as possible. They should be able to interpret the signals and references in the picture immediately, without having to work it out. Simple, iconic images get the point across, and let you concentrate on the technique and images.

In your original, the images aren't clear enough to take in at a glance, especially when spherized. The guy at the top can just about be made out to be holding a camera, but the woman at the bottom appears to be varnishing a 3-legged yak.

Keep it simple!

Do you know how long it took me to find an image of a 3-legged yak??!!

I definitely see your point though, it did start with the Photoshop bauble, which is recognisable to everyone, well, within the target audience, anyway. Again, I was slightly blinkered after that and should have made the other two different, which would have achieved both clarity and interest.

Still, this is a good learning experience.

My tuppence worth on the reflections David.

Looking into a bauble you get the cast of its colour on the reflection you see, therefore a reflection on a red bauble wouldn't be white (as in his T-shirt).

I find observations from life are always a good starting point for realism.

They weren't actually supposed to be reflections, just images on the face of the decorations.

This is probably why the piece didn't work as well as it could, neither one thing nor t'other.

Ah now it all makes sense David. The problem is that people will be looking to see reflections in baubles, the way you have chosen is very difficult to convey unless you made a bauble shaped Vector Shape with the images inside then people will not then think of the images as reflection but as images in their own right with the bauble shapes being purely frames.
